...Talking about historic feats, San Beda regained the title it lost to San Sebastian last year, in grand fashion – completing a sweep of 18 games, including two over the Stags in the finals to become the first team to sweep their way to the championship since the SSC Stags did it 16 years ago.

The Lions thus took their fourth crown in five years and 15th overall.

San Beda also matched Ateneo’s sweep of both divisions in the UAAP as the Red Cubs conquered the Staglets to reign supreme in the high school division of the 86-year-old league.

San Beda's Garvo Lanete has earned himself a Pivotal Player award for the big role he played during the Finals of the NCAA Season 86

Lanete will be honored when the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps holds the Collegiate Basketball Awards on Jan. 17 at the Topaz 1 of the Gateway Suites in Cubao.

He will join San Beda coach Frankie Lim in the list of winners that will be feted by the country's leading broadsheets and tabloids who covered the collegiate basketball beat this past season.

Coach Frankie Lim has earlier named the NCAA Coach of the Year.

In a team loaded with role players, it was Lanete who shone brightest to help San Beda complete a historic 18-game sweep of the 86th season.

He averaged 15.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists against deposed champion San Sebastian in the finals.

San Beda's Season 86 campaign in the NCAA was anything but ordinary.

Frankie Lim's Red Lions were dominant in a historic ride, as an epitome of perfection.

After losing its NCAA crown last year, San Beda made sure it would regain the crown in a memorable way.

The Red Lions came out and showed that a team can be invincible and flawless, as they turned in an immaculate 18-0 record en route to reclaiming the NCAA throne.

Following a 16-0 sweep of the elimination round, the Red Lions defeated San Sebastian, the team that took their title away last year, in two games in a much-hyped finals rematch that ended a historic season.

Lim, the fiery San Beda coach, couldn’t be any happier with what his powerhouse squad accomplished this past year. “It was sweet. It can’t get any better. I was just so happy for my boys."

NCAA fans expected the best-of-three series to go the distance and the games to be a nip-and-tuck affair, but the dribblers from Mendiola were all business and made it a one-sided series.

Enjoying a thrice-to-beat incentive in the finals as a reward for sweeping the eliminations, the Red Lions needed to win only twice to clinch the title.

San Beda handily routed San Sebastian in both games, 93-73 in Game 1 and 85-70 in Game 2, to exact revenge on its conquerors the previous year. The Stags also swept the Red Lions in the 85th NCAA season to foil San Beda’s bid to win a fourth straight title.

San Beda’s 18-0 slate definitely earned a place in the history books as the Red Lions became only the first team to sweep their way to a title with that number of consecutive wins.

San Sebastian was the last NCAA team to sweep an entire season when Rommel Adducul led the Stags to complete the feat 16 years ago.

But San Beda’s 18-game run became the longest winning streak ever accomplished in the league’s rich history. The 16-0 elimination round sweep also stood as the longest.

“My guys deserve every bit of it. They’ve worked so hard in practice. You should just see them in practice. How serious they are, how committed they are on winning every game," said Lim.

“The sweep is great. The players made history and I’m happy for them. I’m happy to be a part of that. Only history could judge this team. It’s a good feeling accomplishing a feat like this, I hope this would last a long time."

It was also San Beda’s 15th basketball title, one short of Letran’s league-best 16 trophies.

Coach Frankie Lim of the undefeated NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions and Coach Norman Black of the 3-peat UAAP titlist Ateneo Blue Eagels will again share one thing in common when the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps honors the top performers of the 2010 collegiate basketball season next year.

The UAAP-NCAA Press Corps, a group of sportswriters covering collegiate basketball games, will hand out the awards on January 17 at 7 p.m. at the Topaz 1 of the Gateway Suites in Cubao, Quezon City.

Black and Lim, who lead the list of awardees, will receive the Coach of the Year (COY) award, the same honor they shared in 2008. Both mentors were former members of the 1996 San Miguel team in the PBA as coach and player, respectively.

Both seasoned bench tacticians won the COY award after steering their respective teams to the UAAP and NCAA crowns in the recent collegiate season.

Lim will accept his second NCAA COY plum after guiding San Beda to a perfect 16-0 record in the elimination round of Season 86 on their way to a two-game sweep of San Sebastian in the finals for their fourth title in five years.

The NCAA Policy Board gave the Management Committee strict marching orders to research and study further the issue concerning foreign players particularly in the basketball competition before it could render a final decision on the matter.

Anthony Morillo, OAR, of host San Sebastian in a statement.

"Accordingly, the Policy Board instructed the NCAA Management Committee to submit its views at its next meeting," it added.

It’s fun being a cheerleader in high school, there's a certain oomph students put to it. Plus the bonding is definitely different compared when you move to college. “You fall, but you can rely on your teammates to help each other up,” says member San Beda Alabang high school senior Mayumi Toribio who joined the squad in her senior year. “I literally begged my mom that I join,” she says. Her mom finally said yes and is now very supportive. Though balancing the squad and her studies is no easy task, her mom noticed that she has become happier.

Team Captain Angelica Consulta has gained a lot being the “big sister” of her squad., and her leadership skills came to good use when a prized member was suddenly pulled out by her parents, days before the NCC competition. She did necessary damage control. “Being the cheerleading captain taught me to value of teamwork and to be disciplined,” she says. Under her leadership the squad gave the school it’s 4th WNCAA Cheerleading Championship trophy.

Anne Campos got tired performing in inter-batch cheering competitions in school that’s why she joined, “Cheerleading is my passion. It’s different when you perform for the school,” she says.
Inspired by San Beda’s winning tradition and under the tutelage of Coach Ajjie Mendelebar the team has won four straight WNCAA Cheerleading titles. “The kids are fun to work with,” says Coach Ajjie. “They have enthusiasm; they appreciate each other, and are always willing to explore new things. The girls have learned to love the sport even though it’s hard because they enjoy what they’re doing.” It boils down to having the right attitude, he adds.

Since 1976, he’s been a fixture at the school; now, Bedans pay tribute to him through a shirt.

WHO is Mang Roger? For Bedans, especially those studying in Mendiola, he is the balut vendor. He has become the unofficial Bedan icon by being always present at Red Lion games.

A Bedan’s NCAA opening would not be the same without him. Forever the lucky guy being given a Patron ticket, Mang Roger has always been there to support the school team—while waving to his many suki.

His balut is considered a Bedan delicacy. He has been selling balut since 1976, when San Beda was still an all-boys school and the grade school and high school departments were still in Mendiola. Come 3 p.m., the would students come out and go straight to Mang Roger, then stationed by the phone booth, selling his balut and chicharon merienda.

The NCAA’s decision to review the practice of allowing foreign players to play in the league doesn’t sit well for San Beda coach Frankie Lim.

Lim, who steered the Lions to the championship this season with the help of American behemoth Sudan Daniel, sees it as “a move to bring us down.”

“I think it’s an attack to San Beda,” Lim said on Wednesday. “Parang Filipino crab mentality yan. Hilahan pababa.”
