A series of traditional activities will remind past and present students that ‘once a Bedan, always a Bedan’ isn’t just a line on a T-shirt.

TRADITION PLAYS an important role for the members of the San Beda community. That’s not only through its tradition of scholastic success, or its tradition of winning the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). These are traditions that are instilled in every member of the Bedan community, such as the Benedictine values of ora et labora (work and prayer).

This January, signals the Pista ng Sto. Niño, more popularly known to Bedans as the annual Frolics. Some consider the Frolics to be the foundation day of the school, usually held on the fourth weekend of January (January 28-30).

The three-day activities started yesterday, January 28, at 5 am, with the annual marathon, which passed through Nagtahan, Otis, and Ayala Bridge, before heading back to San Beda. The ribbon cutting formally opened the Frolics celebration.

January is the month of the ‘Santo Niño’ in the Filipino Catholic calendar. Devotion to the Holy Infant is the oldest and probably the most popular in the Philippines.

This Sto. Nino of Prague was venerated
in the small chapel of the old
San Beda College in Tanduay.
Pigafetta, Ferdinand Magellan’s chronicler, reported that a “Santo Niño” statue was given to Queen Juana, wife of King Humabon of Cebu in 1521 after her baptism. In 1565, when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and his men settled in Cebu, a child’s statue, probably the same one given to Queen Juana, was found in a box among some ruins.

On 13 December 1903, the Benedictine Community in Manila organized the Confraternity of the Infant Jesus for students of the “Colegio de San Beda”. On 17 January 1904, the feast of the “Santo Niño” at “San Beda” was celebrated for the first time. Since no statue was available, a framed picture of the Holy Child was used.

A wooden image of the “Santo Niño de Praga” (Holy Child of Prague) was installed in the Our Lady of Montserrat chapel in Tanduay, San Miguel district, Manila on 4 November 1904. It is said to be a copy of the image in the church of the Salesian Sisters in Barcelona, Spain.

The Archbishop of Manila, Msgr. Jeremias Harty, gave permission for establishment of the “Santo Niño de Praga” Confraternity on 28 December 1904. The first procession of this “Santo Niño” image was held on 20 January 1905.

In 1926 the Benedictine Priory and the ‘Colegio de San Beda’ moved to Mendiola Street. Since 1975, the Feast of the “Santo Niño de Praga” has been celebrated by the Benedictine Abbey every third Sunday of January.

...The prime minister was added to the list of prominent visitors to the Niño de Praga in San Beda that includes the late President Corazon Aquino and St. Maximilian Kolbe, who celebrated Mass there years before he was martyred in a Nazi concentration camp.

The Pista ng Santo Niño sa San Beda is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of January. It is amazing that we see no sign of Santo Niño fatigue since the feast of the Santo Niño de Tondo and the Santo Niño de Cebu falls on the third Sunday of January. A Santo Niño fiesta was organized this year by Filipinos in Saint Ignatius Church in the Jesuit-run Sophia University in Tokyo, drawing curious Japanese to the display of different images.

San Beda College stamped its domination in the 86th NCAA as it ruled both the men’s and women’s division of the taekwondo competitions at the Fil-Oil/Flying V Arena in San Juan City last Tuesday.

The Lions racked up a total of 421.5 points to topple the College of St. Benilde and retain the crown.

Rookie sensation Ron Alfred David, a product of Baguio City, emerged as the tournament MVP after coming out with the worthiest performance in the men’s side.

The Lionesses were not to be outdone as they ruled their division to become the first champion after women’s taekwondo was finally approved as a regular sport following a three-year stint as a demonstration event.

Reyna Alarva, who was later named MVP, spearheaded San Beda’s charge as the Lionesses amassed a total of 313.37, and survived the fierce challenge put by St. Benilde and Letran, which finished second and third with 262.5 and 234.8 points, respectively.

The double victory was a repeat of the reign of the juniors and collegiate varsity teams after reigning supreme in basketball with the Lions making history with a historic 18-game sweep of the tournament.

San Beda now has five titltes in the men's side alone with its other victories coming from table tennis and swimming that should boost its bid of cornering its first ever overall championship.

San Beda edged Mapua, 67-64 to boost its campaigns in the seventh Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup at the San Beda’s St. Placid Gym in Mendiola.

Straight from high school, Kiefer Ravena and Baser Amer would jump straight to pro play should the PBA board allow Smart Gilas’ to take over Barako Bull’s slot in the second conference.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas vice chairman Ricky Vargas said they intend to include the two Phl Youth standouts in the men’s training pool they hope will be allowed to play as guest team in the PBA reinforced tourney.

Ravena and Amer have just completed their eligibility in high school ball with Ateneo and San Beda, respectively.
[I think] this is in line with the Frolics 2011, so Bedans, vote now and pick your bet for this year's Faces of San Beda.

San Beda edged Emilio Aguinaldo, 2-1, yesterday to seize an early share of lead with opening day winner St. Benilde that jumpstarted its title campaign in the 86th NCAA football competition at the San Beda pitch.

It was a victory that somehow eased the pain of the Lions' heartbreaking 0-1 defeat at the hands of the Blazers in the finale of last year's hotly contested championship in the event that is considered the world's most popular sport and is graining ground in the country.

St. Benilde's monumental upset in Season 85 ended the Mendiola-based eight-year reign in the oldest and one of the most prestigious and popular leagues in the land today.

The Lions though hope to bring in the momentum of their vengeful victory over the Blazers in last October's Philippine University Games in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental that somehow soothed some of the pain from their defeat a season ago.

The rivalry should make the CSB-San Beda match on Feb. 3 at the football field of the Philsports Arena in Pasig City more interesting since it would be viewed as a sneak preview of this year's much-awaited finale.

Juniors stand out Kiefer Ravena hasn’t made up his mind about his college plans, inviting more teams, including reigning NCAA champion San Beda College to line up for his services.

A graduating high school student of Ateneo de Manila University, the 16-year-old cager said Monday night he’s not yet sure whether he’ll join the Norman Black-mentored Ateneo Blue Eagles in the next UAAP season, more than four months after powering the Blue Eaglets to a “three-peat.”

“Coach Norman (Black) hasn’t talked to me about it,” said Ravena in his short speech after receiving the UAAP Juniors Player of the Year award from the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps at the Gateway Suites in Quezon City.

San Beda coach Frankie Lim has joined the recruitment fray for the 5-11 Ravena, the son of former PBA star Bong, who averaged 20 points a game on 51 percent shooting, 5.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists (second in the league) and 2.6 steals (third) in just 25 minutes of play in his final year with the Eaglets.

“Pag-hindi nila kinuha, I think we have to be aggressive. Maraming nag-hahabol sa kanya,” Lim said. “But I think coach Norman (Black) will pursue him. He will keep him in Ateneo. But If Ateneo can’t make him happy, nandito lang ako sa tabi.”

But Ateneo Athletics director Ricky Palou had earlier said he is confident Ravena will stay with Ateneo.

REIGNING five-time champion San Sebastian tackles San Beda, while Letran meets Emilio Aguinaldo College today in the restart of the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament semifinals at the EAC gym.

The Lady Stags are heavily favored against the Red Lady Spikers in the 2 p.m. duel, while the Knights are expected to breeze past the Lady Generals in the second match.

San Beda and EAC took over from University of Perpetual Help System Dalta and College of Saint Benilde, who were disqualified from the tournament after two of their players were discovered playing in an invitational league while the season is ongoing.

Before the decision was handed out by the NCAA last Wednesday, the Lady Altas and the Lady Blazers, who finished 1-2 at the end of the eliminations, were within a win of clinching finals berths.

Despite being the overwhelming underdogs, the Lioness and the Lady Generals are out to give their best shots after being given a new lease on life owing to the controversial turn of events in the league.

The top two squads after the short single-round semifinals will face off in the best-of-three championship slated next week.

College of St. Benilde and University of Perpetual Help were disqualified in the 86th NCAA women's volleyball semifinals after some of their players were found to have played in other tournaments without the consent of league officials which is a violation under NCAA rules.

Fr. Vic Calvo of Letran, the tournament director, handed down the verdict yesterday, a day after the league received pertinent documents and photos showing two players from each squad playing in different leagues during the same time the eliminations were being played last month.

The disqualification of CSB and Perpetual gave Emilio Aguinaldo College and San Beda College free ride to the semis where they will meet Letran and defending champion San Sebastian in a single round robin format.
NCAA Football Tournament tips off this Saturday, 8AM at the LSGH Football grounds. For the opening salvo, our very own San Beda Junior Red Booters will face CSJL at 1PM.

San Beda’s Borgie Hermida will add another distinction to his colorful collegiate basketball career with the Super Senior awards that will be given by the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps in the Collegiate Basketball Awards this month.

The Red Lions created arguably the biggest separation between contender and pretenders since 1997, which was also the last time an NCAA school ran the table en route to the title. But if Ateneo’s more arduous path to the UAAP promised land was to be expected, the San Beda juggernaut caught a lot of people off-guard.
It wasn’t the thought of San Beda retaking the crown from San Sebastian College-Recoletos that wowed even the most casual of fans, but the manner it did. In their 18-game sweep, coach Frankie Lim’s unit won by double-digits 16 times with an average winning margin of 20 points.
Along the way, a few more degrees of separation were created, as the bottom five teams won just two games over the league’s top four squads (Arellano was the only bottom five squad to do so, actually, beating San Sebastian and Mapúa Institute of Technology).
