The San Beda Lady Spikers continued its surprising run  yesterday, fashioning out a 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 win over Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers in the National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s volleyball tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Banking on the steady plays of Janine Marciano and rookie Kim dela Vega, the SBC Lady Spikers took off to a flying start en route to their second straight win in the tournament following their upset  win  over defending champion San Sebastian College  last Wednesday.

The Mendiola based spikers are now tied  for the lead with the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Lady Altas, who also won two in a row.

“Pigil yung laro ng mga bata sa first set kaya sabi ko sa kanila huwag kayong madadala sa una nating panalo.  Kailangang maging motivation natin ito to work harder,”  said  San Beda coach Ryan Jeorge Sucaldito.

The Lady Bombers, meanwhile, absorbed their second straight  loss and dropped into a tie with the Mapua Lady Cardinals at the bottom of the standings.

In the men's volleyball competition, the San Beda Red Spikers are also on a winning run as they dump the Heavy Bombers 25-18, 25-15, 25-15.

With an inspiring performance, San Beda College quickly erased its former tag as an also-ran, as it hacked out a 25-15, 25-19, 25-20 upset win over six-time champion San Sebastian College yesterday in the National Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball tournament at the San Beda Gym in Mendiola, Manila.

In clinching the win, the Lady Spikers posted their first-ever victory over the powerhouse Lady Stags since joining the women's volleyball competition in 2006.

“Before this one, hindi pa kami nananalo ng isang set sa kanila. Nakakagaan sa loob, na-overwhelm ako. Yung pinaghirapan ko sa training, sulit. Maganda naman ang resulta,” said San Beda coach Ryan Jeorge Sucaldito.

The San Beda Lady Spikers have lost seven straight games to the Lady Stags in their previous match-ups.

From a close 15-10 lead in the opening set, the Mendiola-based spikers pulled away to 23-12, behind a big run capped by a service ace by reigning best blocker Ces Molna en and held on from there.

In the second set, the Lady Stags, who played minus key players Elaine Cruz, Bonsai Mirasol and Bamcie Belen who graduated last year. fought back and raced to a 14-10 lead.

But they couldn’t hold on to the lead, as Janine Mariano racked up several hits to put San Beda on top for good, 24-18.

Smelling blood, the San Beda Lady Spikers went for the kill in the third set. But the Lady Stags fought valiantly vehind reigning MVP Joy Benito to force a 12-12 deadlock.

Defending women’s champion San Sebastian College starts its quest for a seventh straight championship when it tackles host San Beda College at the resumption of the National Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball tournament at the San Beda Gym in Mendiola, Manila.

The Lady Stags, led by two-time Most Valuable Player awardee Joy Benito and teammates Karen Berbano, Dafna Robiños, Bea Uy and libero Mae Crisostomo, trade volleys against the SBC Lady Spikers at 9 a.m., right after the clash of their junior teams at 8 a.m.

The Recto-based volleybelles will be playing minus Bonsai Mirasol and Bamcie Belen, who graduated last year, and ace hitter Elaine Cruz, giving the Lady Spikers an even chance of pulling an upset.

The San Beda Lady Spikers, who will be led by mainstays Cherry Quizon, Coline Malana, Janine Marciano, Ces Molina and Mona Diolazo, will be eyeing a better finish after making it to the Final Four last year after a long wait.

San Beda Red Spikers and San Sebastian also clash today at 10 a.m. for the men's volleyball game.

The PHL men’s team called Sinag Pilipinas completed its domination of the basketball tournament of the 26th Southeast Asian Games, trouncing Thailand, 85-57, in Sunday night’s gold-medal match that from the start was virtually in the bag for a country that adores basketball.

Greg Slaughter played his seven-foot frame to the hilt and top-scored for Sinag Pilipinas with 16 points to go with eight decisive rebounds. RR Garcia, the FEU spitfire and a former UAAP MVP, had 12 in the match that underscored the Philippines’ supremacy in the region.

Last UAAP season's top rookies, Bobby Ray Parks and Kiefer Ravena, had 15 and 10 points, respectively.

“This means a lot to us, not just for me but the whole team," said Norman Black, who added a SEA Games gold medal to his already illustrious coaching career that includes a PBA grand slam and a four-peat in the UAAP.

It looked like the entire Filipino community in Jakarta came to witness the trouncing at the Britana Arena, which was expected of a team that was rarely threatened—momentarily by Malaysia in the semifinals—in these Games.

The crowd was even sprinkled with young Indonesian ladies who came to see their "handsome" Filipino basketball idols.

But at the end of the day Sunday, the victory represented just one medal.

Garvo Lanete, the sweet-shooting guard from San Beda, won’t see action for the Sinag Pilipinas national team’s gold medal match against Thailand on Sunday.

Sinag coach Norman Black spoke about the possibility of losing Lanete, one of the most consistent outside shooters for the team, in the finals during the post game interview shortly after the Filipinos ripped the Malaysians, 103-70, in their semifinals encounter.

“He had a bad fall and there’s something wrong with his shoulder. I’m preparing for the fact that we’re going to miss him in the finals,” said Black. “It would affect our rotation and that means that I have to bring down Chris Ellis to the big guard spot to fill the void left by Garvo.”

Ellis, a 6-foot-4 athletic forward, plays for the NLEX Road Warriors in the PBA D-League. A tall player who can hit outside jumpers and run the breaks, he is likely to play dual role, reliving Chris Tiu and Ray Parks in the big guard spot with Lanete not seeing action.

The Philippines will face Thailand at 7 p.m. on Sunday with the Filipinos hoping to extend their dominance in SEA Games basketball.

The Pinoy cagers have defeated the Thais, 103-69, during their preliminary round match, but Black doesn’t want to take chances against their rivals with the gold medal at stake.

“We will come out prepared. Obviously, our objective here is to win the gold medal and we’re close to achieving that goal,” added Black.

Anthony and David Semerad, Fil-Australian twins who played key roles down the stretch of San Beda's recent back to back championship season, have reportedly traded in their Red Lion unis for the blue and white of Ateneo de Manila.

According to a source close to the Red Lions, the duo left earlier this week and will sit out the remainder of the second academic semester to enroll at Ateneo in March, starting with the summer sem of 2012.

News of the twins' move took the San Beda coaching staff by surprise, adds the source.

Anthony Semerad was in and out of the line-up this season, but came on strong towards the tailend. His most memorable game of the season came against San Sebastian in the second round, when he exploded for 10 points in six minutes against the zone of the Golden Stags. Overall, he averaged 6.4 points in 15.7 minutes, while shooting a team-best 39 percent from outside the arc.

David Semerad was San Beda's third-string center, providing additional toughness behind Kyle Pascual and Dave Marcelo, but he strutted his stuff on the largest stage possible: the second game of the NCAA Finals this year, with San Beda already having won the first match. In a defensive grinder of a fourth quarter, David scored seven of his team's nine points, finishing with 15 markers, three rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block in 22 minutes.

In addition to the Semerads, San Beda will lose Dave Marcelo, Garvo Lanete, Mar Villahermosa and Sudan Daniel to either graduation or eligibility. They do however, have a stacked Team B, that features names like Ivan Ludovice (transfer from NU), Art Dela Cruz Jr. (transfer from ADMU), Jaypee Mendoza (former Team A), Fil-Am Julius Armon, and Nigerian Ola Adeogun, plus a champion San Beda Red Cubs team that graduates all but four players.

San Beda’s Dave Marcelo has gotten clearance to suit up for the Sinag Pilipinas national basketball team bound for 26th SEA Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The news was relayed by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Sonny Barrios.

“I just got word that Marcelo was accepted in the final 12 by the SEA Games [organizing committee],” said Barrios in a text message.

The coaching staff headed by Norman Black had initially mulled not including Marcelo in the final roster, because the San Beda center was not included in the initial list submitted by the SBP to the Philippine Olympic Committee. Marcelo, the Most Valuable Player of the recently-concluded NCAA finals, came in as a late replacement for San Sebastian players Ian Sangalang and Ronald Pascual for failing to attend regular practices.

Black said Ateneo center Justin Chua was supposed to replace Marcelo in the roster but with the turn of events, he said the staff now faces a “good problem.”

Marcelo is a welcome addition to Sinag Pilipinas, which will defend its title in the SEA Games, as it gives the Philippine five a big man who plays solid defense.

With Marcelo a virtual shoo-in for the top twelve spots, Black now has to pick two players from the Sinag Pilipinas pool who will be relegated to the reserve list.

NCAA South host San Beda Alabang joined SBC Mendiola's celebration after the Alabang Red Cubs throttled the Baby Saints, 69-54, to capture their sixth straight championship in the said event sponsored by Chocolate Clothing, Philips Avent, Goody and Chefs Classics.

San Beda Alabang’s Jude Ballada was adjudged as the juniors tournament Most Valuable Player while teammate Reychan Bernaldez was picked the finals MVP.

Perpetual-Laguna bagged the Senior's title with Merlin Custodio named as finals MVP for the second consecutive time in the seniors tourney.

Meanwhile, the Saints also copped the men’s and girls’ volleyball titles.

The San Beda Red Cubs poured everything in the second half en route to an emphatic 69-61 victory over the De La Salle Greenies yesterday to clinch the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association of the Philippines juniors championship before a capacity crowd at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The victory completed San Beda’s domination of both the seniors and juniors side, following a Red Lions\' sweep of the Stags last week. The Red Cubs also won their third straight championship, and a record 19th overall, while frustrating the Greenies, who made it to the finals after more than three decades.

Francis Abarcar and Giden Babilonia, son of the late PBA player Gido Babilonia, combined in the third quarter as the Red Cubs outscored the Greenies, 22-14, that pushed the Mendiola-based dribblers for good.

Abarcar, later named as the finals MVP, led the Red Cubs with 18 points, after scoring nine in the fourth, including a trey with only 2:38 left in the contest.

The Red Cubs beat the Greenies for the second time in three days. They prevailed, 74-73, to tie the series.

The Greenies took Game 1, 85-82, two weeks ago at the Araneta Coliseum.

With 19 championships, the Red Cubs surpassed the record of the Mapua Red Robins, who had 18 crowns, in the list of most number of junior titles in the NCAA.

They also now own three twin titles, after winning both the seniors and juniors crowns in 1978 and 2010.

Overall, San Beda has the most basketball championships in the NCAA with 34, 16 in the senior, 19 in the junior division.

San Beda goes for a record 19th crown today against CSB-La Salle Greenhills in the third game of their NCAA juniors basketball finals series at The Arena in San Juan.

Thanks to a narrow 74-73 win on Monday, the Red Cubs can break their one-year stranglehold with Mapua for the most number of high school cage titles when they take on the Greenies at 2 p.m.

Coached by Brit Reroma, the Taytay-based cagers drew strong games from Francis Abarcar, Arvin Tolentino, Daryl Nazareno and Antonio Bonsubre to hack out a thrilling victory over LSGH.

The win made up for a stunning 85-82 loss in last week’s Game 1 battle at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

That handed the Red Cubs their first loss of the season after sweeping the 18-game elimination round.

San Beda entered the finals with a thrice-to-beat advantage, an incentive for finishing the elims with a perfect record.

Reroma, who last season took over from the legendary Ato Badolato, hopes to see his team put up the same effort in its bid to close out the gritty Greenies.

Expect LSGH to put up another gallant fight with Mario Bonleon, Thomas Torres, Jon Villaruz and Andre Paras around.

A win by the John Flores-mentored Greenies, a fourth-and-deciding game will be held on Monday.

The Red Lions widely opened their eyes to beat the Stags and swept the Championships with a final game score of 57-55 last October 26, 2011 to gain a back- to- back title this NCAA season.

The Bedans roared with excitement from start to victory. Champions deserve not only a trophy but also a special symbolism of hardwork, team unity and dedication.

For the first time in NCAA history, Silverworks, the leading retailer of sterling silver jewelry in the Philippines,  presents the championship bull rings to each team player.

Mr. Louie Gutierrez, President of Silverworks, awarded the Symbolic Championship Ring to the San Beda Red Lions during the Final Game.

Will this championship bull ring be an inspiration for another win next season?

Congratulations to the San Beda Red Lion- the King of NCAA Season 87!

TV and movie celebrities shared the runway with Ford Supermodel of the World winner Danica Magpantay for Freego's latest collections showcased last October 27 at the Main Atrium of the SM Mall of Asia.

The show opened with a solo male dancer grooving to Chris Brown's hit, "Tonight." After taking off his shirt, the evening instantly turned hotter!

Models, one by one, or in groups, came out sporting key pieces from the Midnight Hunter collection.

Others posed on a conveyor belt—a visual and technical first at Philippine Fashion Week—to give denim lovers a glimpse of what to expect this summer.

Spotlight was on rayon, powder stretch, and coated denim, plus, dusty grays, inky blues, and deep shades of black.

For the Conventional Spy segment, models were clad in coats and jackets; for the Russian Spy, models wore outfits with Fur as accent.

The male models went shirtless for the Revolutionary Spy segment.

And for the Cool & Dry and Organic collections, light and airy pieces—like shorts and knitted tops—took center stage.

A subtle Asian feel was evident in separates with loose, flowing silhouettes in whites, bright colors, pastels and plaids.

Plus, there were references to the bohemian lifestyle of the '70s in the flared and high-waist pants for women.

Selections for summer also featured fabric innovations such as bamboo denim and organic cotton that absorb sweat, thus, giving the wearer comfort and ease of movement.

The Reversible Collection was also unveiled. Two groups of four male models appeared in various stages of undress, holding their pants or shorts.

Danica did the finale wearing a flowing charmeuse gown and an acid washed denim jacket.

Also joining the fashion show was Samantha Gomez, the country's bet to this year's edition of the runway tilt, as well as select players from the NCAA Season 87 champions, San Beda Red Lions- Anjo Caram, Carmelo Lim, Sundan Daniel, Garvo Lanete, and the UAAP team Adamson Falcons.

After their heated battle for the NCAA crown, Garvo Lanete and Jake Pascual of champion San Beda, and Ian Sangalang and Ronald Pascual of runner-up San Sebastian will join hands along with other collegiate stars in defending PHL’s basketball title in the 26th Southeast Asian Games.

The Red Lions and Golden Stags stalwarts will rejoin the Sinag-Pilipinas team for full-time practices beginning today as PHL 5 fine-tunes its plays and works on cohesion two weeks before the battle in Indonesia.

“We’ll have everybody beginning tomorrow (Monday),” said coach Norman Black after Sinag bowed to San Miguel Beer’s ASEAN Basketball League team, 73-66, in a tune-up game where they missed the NCAA finals protagonists and Far Eastern’s RR Garcia, who's down with a bad stomach.

Black has assembled a crew of mostly varsity standouts like Ateneo’s Greg Slaughter, Kiefer Ravena and Nico Salva, and NU’s Bobby Ray Parks, Jr. with reinforcements Chris Tiu of Smart Gilas, and PBA D-League players Chris Hodge and Chris Ellis.

Dragged into another tight endgame, the San Beda Red Cubs proved steadier this time.

The defending champion Red Cubs showed steely nerves down the stretch as they nipped the St. Benilde-La Salle Green Hills Greenies, 74-73, before a huge crowd at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan Monday to move within a victory of clinching the NCAA juniors title.

Daryl Nazareno knocked in the marginal point—a free throw with 8.1 seconds remain ing—and then center Antonio Bonsubre broke up the Greenies’ final play as San Beda pulled through despite trailing for most of the second and third periods.

“We know that they have the stronger lineup, but we showed our character as defending champions,” said San Beda coach Britt Reroma. “We definitely want to end this on Thursday.”

The Red Cubs can clinch their third straight title—and a record 19th overall—with a win at 2 p.m. Thursday. The deciding game, if necessary, is scheduled on Monday.

Francis Abarcar shot 21 points, while former Under-16 standout Arvin Tolentino drilled in 19 points and collected 12 rebounds for the Red Cubs, who prevailed despite dishing out a season-low six assists.

Nazareno finished with 16 points, despite going 1 for 7 from beyond the arc.

Buoyed by their 88-85 win in Game 1 that also snapped the Red Cubs’ 18-game winning streak, the Greenies again put San Beda on the ropes for long stretches.

With Jon Villaruz on the firing end, the Greenies posted the game’s biggest lead at 45-35 with 8:36 left in the third period.

But the Red Cubs quickly turned the game around behind the trio of Arvin Tolentino, Nazareno and Francis Abarcar, who gave the lead back to San Beda, 55-54.
