The defending champions San Beda College Red Lions booked a quarterfinals seat last Saturday in Group A of the 8th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup after ousting the Mapua Cardinals in a fight-marred encounter.
The Red Lions came up with their fourth win five games, but only after the Cardinals conceded the game with the score tied at 64-all at the St. Placid Gymnasium inside the San Beda campus.
The Cardinals were on the offensive when San Beda’s Julius Armon got into a scuffle with Mapua’s Jonathan Banal following some trash talk and an interception play at the midcourt line.
This led to a bench clearing incident with 3:22 left on the game clock. The referees ejected most of the players who entered the court, and Mapua head coach Chito Victolero decided to forfeit the game upon learnning that only four of his players will be allowed to play.
San Beda still had six players who can see action.
With their victory, the Red Lions now join two earlier Group A qualifiers, the National University Bulldogs and the Arellano University Chiefs in the quarterfinals.

"tied 84 all, game ended with a forfeit from mapua making sbc the winner of this match. jonathan banal gave our player a punch with 3minutes left in the game clock. our player retaliated & called for 2nd motion, then a bench clearing occurred. most of mapua's player was on court compared to sbc's, as a result majority of their players were thrown out and some from sbc. having inadequate number of players forced mapua to forfeit the match."

"Here is my version of the incident (more focus on the game):
Jon Banal made a three, he went to Armon (so that is his name, a good addition to the team) and thrash talked.Ok"

Back-to-back NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions showed their veteran mettle and poise as they took down the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 88-82, to claim the title in the MLKP Sinulog Cup yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Lightning-quick guard Ryusei Koga provided the fireworks with his 22 points but it was much-heralded rookie Baser “The Hammer” Amer who dropped the anchor on the heads of the Cobras with his back-breaking offensive exploits in crunchtime.
Ironically, the Cobras picked the most inopportune of times to lose their A-game, as they trailed early before making a fiery rally in the second half.
The wards of head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba played lackluster basketball as they fell behind, 13-25, after the opening canto.
Things turned from bad to worse for SWU in a jiffy as the deficit ballooned to 17 at halftime, 28-45, and went as high as 19, behind the blur-like fastbreak baskets of Koga.
But the Cobras had some venom left to spew as Jeff Viernes connived with Abby Santos and Ben Mballa in a 12-2 rally that trimmed the deficit to just single digits, 40-49.
They found themselves behind by just seven, 59-66, heading to the fourth canto.

Smart White, bannered by Kiefer Ravena and Chris Tiu, defeated Meralco Red, led by Gerald Anderson and Nico Salva, 118-107, in the FastBreak basketball charity event Friday.
The final score hardly mattered, though, as the participating players– rivals on court but friends off the court and off the camera– put on a show before a sizeable crowd at the Arena in San Juan with the proceeds going to the victims of Tropical Storm “Sendong.”
“It was fun to play basketball but at the same time we were helping our fellow Filipinos,” said the 18-year-old Ravena, who initiated and put together the “meeting of stars’’ event in just two weeks.
It was just another day in the office for UAAP and NCAA stars like RR Garcia, Baser Amer, Jake Pascual, Justin Chua, Sam Marata, Joshua Webb, Byron Villarias and Kevin Alas, while the TV personalities, just for a game, tried to keep pace with the collegiate basketball talents.
Garcia and Salva led the Red team with 14 points apiece as their squad held the lead early in the game–anchored on Anderson’s 11-point first half performance.
But when Tiu and Ravena started connecting on their shots–with the help of Eat Bulaga’s Jose Manalo, who played around as a referee–the White team started to rally back to win the game.
The game was more of an entertainment show than a competitive contest, though, with players from both squads fooling around the court to the delight of the fans.
