The brand-new Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena will open its doors to basketball next month. If the NCAA decides to hold its season opener at the P3.6 Billion facility on June 23, then the collegiate league will gain the historic distinction of being the first to stage a game on the Robbins maplewood court with NBA-standard Spalding goals, an eight-sided center-hung LED Daktronics scoreboard and two-sided shot clocks.

The NCAA will make a decision any day now on whether to hold the inaugurals at the MOA Arena or the Smart Araneta Coliseum which is reportedly the preferred choice of the TV coveror for practical logistical reasons.

If the NCAA decides on the Big Dome, then the first basketball game to be played at the MOA Arena will pit the PBA selection coached by Tim Cone against Yao Ming’s visiting Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese pro league on June 28. Another game involving the Sharks is being arranged against coach Chot Reyes’ Smart Gilas on June 30, also at the MOA Arena. For sure, the UAAP will launch its new season at the MOA Arena on July 14 with National University (NU) as host.

Thank you guys!

Leading a team to a successful season is nothing new for Ronald "Ronnie" Magsanoc.  Considered one of the greatest 25 players of all time in the PBA, the man they call the "Point Laureate" has always been the main force behind several championship-winning teams since his high school days. A smart point guard armed with long-range sniping, Magsanoc has held numerous titles in the sport including an NCAA juniors crown for San Beda, the only UAAP Seniors championship of the UP Maroons, and four PBA diadems for Shell.

But now, Ronnie takes on a new challenge, this time as head coach of the multi-titled reigning NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions.

So far, the 16-time NCAA titlists are looking very sharp, racking up seven straight victories in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup against UAAP squads De La Salle Green Archers, UST Tigers, UP Maroons, UE Warriors and the current UAAP kings Ateneo Blue Eagles, and fellow NCAA teams Mapua Cardinals and Perpetual Help Altas, with Magsanoc at the helm.  There appears to be good chemistry already in the Red Lions' den even when the new coaching staff took over just two weeks before the tournament.  Magsanoc's deputies include long-time buddy Benjie Paras and fellow Meralco Bolts assistants Patrick Fran and Xavier Nunag, holdovers JB Sison and Mark Jomalesa, and San Beda Juniors coach Britt Reroma, with NLEX chief tactician Boyet Fernandez and Bedan Great Boni Carbonell as consultants.

The University of Perpetual Help Altas, the San Beda-A Red Cubs and the Adamson Baby Falcons came up with decisive wins to boost their chances of reaching the quarterfinals of the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament.

The Altas, drawing 12 and 11 points from Femi Babayemi and Scott Thompson, needed two big rallies to clobber the Trinity University of Asia Stallions, 76-66, at the Dom Placid gymnasium of the San Beda-Manila campus in Mendiola.

The Red Cubs got a huge boost from Arvin Dave Tolentino as they slew the Chiang Kai Shek Dragons, 64-58, in the juniors division at the San Andres Complex in Malate, Manila.

Vamico Barroga scored 13 points for the Adamson Baby Falcons, who outplayed San Beda-B, 73-57.

The Altas picked up their 4th win in 5 games, and they moved behind the unbeaten Letran Knights (5-0), in Group B.

The Red Cubs, with Tolentino firing a game-high 21 points, marched to their fifth consecutive victory in Group A of the junior division, while the Baby Falcons remained ahead in Group B at 4-0.

Congratulations to the San Beda Alabang Jr. Pep Squad for placing third at the open division of the Philippine National Games (Palarong Pambansa) Cheerleading category, they're the only high school representative and going against college coed teams.

RT @impactbball: The @SanBedaRedLions are back at it again for week number two of training!

Here's a quick higlight of the San Beda vs 3G game at Venice Beach CA.

"Visiting San Beda Red Lions upset the 3G's Sports USA 87-81 in famous Venice Beach CA where the NBA legends play. The highlight of the game when Ola Adeogun (aka Akim) made a Venice Beach signature dunk to 3G's center 6'11 Matt D from Idaho State. 3G leads all the way to second half courtesy of Matt Rosser a 6'6 guard Filipino born who is playing in CAL Poly NCAA Division 1. Quickness of Red Lions come back with 12 - 0 run in a fourth quarter and 3G's squad unable to control the speedy Red Lions. Coach Ronnie Magsanoc, the rookie coach of San Beda, is happy of the out come of the game. Visiting Red Lions are here in Los Angeles CA for advanced training in Impact Basketball where the NBA Players train."

With the new partnership forged between the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and TV5, a master plan is in the works to make the country’s oldest collegiate league much bigger.

The grand plan is to show NCAA games and tournaments all over the country, according to TV5 executive vice president and COO Bobby Barreiro.

With TV5 serving as more than just a television coveror of the league, Barreiro said the long-term plan is to pattern the local NCAA after the US NCAA.

“The plan is a bit ambitious but that is our vision,” he said. “We hope to make every region in the land represented in the NCAA.”

Like in the US NCAA, the competing schools in various regions will play in a series of qualification tournaments leading up to the Final Four and ultimately, the championship.

The mechanics of the new format, is now under study, Barreiro said. Due to the lack of time, the implementation of the master plan cannot be done this NCAA season, which starts next month.

The NCAA and TV5 formally sealed a three-year contract recently, with TV5 securing the exclusive airing of all of the league’s sporting events—including the centerpiece basketball tournament—over free channel AKTV and cable sports network Hyper.

Fr. Tamerlane Lana of Letran, head of this year’s NCAA’s policy board, warmly welcomed the entry of the new coveror, which took over from a giant conglomerate that had broadcast the NCAA games for close to a decade.

As host of the NCAA South 13th Season, San Beda College Alabang held the closing ceremony on March 13, 2012 at the Multi-purpose Hall of the St. Bede Hall Building.  The ceremony was attended by various representatives from the ten member schools namely Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba (CSJL), De La Salle-Lipa (DLSL), Don Bosco Technical College-Mandaluyong (DBTC), First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH)-Tanauan, Batangas, Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas (LPU), Philippine Christian University-DasmariƱas (PCU-D), San Pablo Colleges (SPC), University of Batangas (UB), University of Perpetual Help System-Laguna (UPHSL), and host school, San Beda College Alabang (SBCA).

“SBCA is honored to host the 13th NCAA, which started on August 13, 2011 and closes today, March 13, 2012,” remarked Rector-President Dom Clement Ma. H. Roque, OSB.  He also mentioned that the ten member schools were able to bond and become good friends.

Dom Clement Ma. H. Roque, OSB and SBCA Coordinating Committee Chair, Fr. Paul M. de Vera, OSB awarded the trophies to the winners and member schools.  The overall champion for the 13th NCAA –South Season was De La Salle-Lipa, followed by University of Perpetual Help System-Laguna and University of Batangas, which placed second and third, respectively.  Although not placing in the top three overall ranking, the host-school emerged victorious in Basketball, Swimming and Taekwondo events.  SBCA was the champion of the Basketball Junior Boys Division for the 6th straight time; the champion of the Swimming Seniors’ Women, Juniors’ Boys, and Juniors’ Girls Divisions; and champion of the Taekwondo Juniors’ Boys Division.

After the awarding ceremony, Dom Clement Ma. H. Roque, OSB officially turned over the NCAA-South Season flag to the next host school of the NCAA-South 14th Season, Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas, headed by Mr. Peter Laurel.

Nigerian Ola Adeogun left early in the third quarter trying to catch a flight for a training trip with the whole San Beda team to Las Vegas, Nevada.

That's all San Beda needed from the 6-6 Adeogun, who played minimal minutes but made significant contributions enough to carry the Lions past the listless Perpetual Help Altas, 74-55, to remain unscathed in the 2012 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup at The Arena in San Juan City today.

Adeogun, who is hoping to get his one-year ban as a spectactor lifted if he passes the eligibility screening committee next month, was bullish with 10 points and the same number of rebounds to help lift the Lions, who were already assured of a seat in the quarterfinals, to their seventh straight win.

"He (Ola) had to leave early to catch up a flight to the US, they're scheduled to fly tonight and I will be joining them the next day," said San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc.

Adeogun's effort complimented that of a strong effort put up by Julius Armon, another player seeking to get his playing papers approved this year who had 20 points, five boards and four assists.

Magsanoc, who took over a month and two days ago, said they're slowly but surely improving to the form he wants.

"Defensively we are getting better, offensively, we will try to get better," he said.

The Altas were led by Earl Thompson but just didn't have enough firepower to match up with the Lions and fell to their third straight defeat.

Perpetual, which will be coached by Aric del Rosario, who steered Santo Tomas to a UAAP four-peat feat in the 90s, in the coming NCAA season this June, was coming into this match losing by just an average margin of three points in their first two assignments against UST and Ateneo, the defending champion here and in the UAAP.

Ronnie Magsanoc has no plans of celebrating his first month since he was appointed San Beda coach. But he sure knows how to make it memorable.

Keeping their cool in a grueling, physical battle, the Red Lions, the reigning NCAA champions, overpowered the undermanned Mapua Cardinals, 77-61, to clinch the first ticket to the quarterfinals of the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Hanes Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan today.

Jake Pascual registered a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Julius Armon scattered 12 points to help the Red Lions clinch the first seat to the quarters with a pristine 6-0 (win-loss) slate.

It was a fitting gift to Magsanoc, who took over the coaching reins of the Red Lions after Frankie Lim resigned exactly a month ago.

"I didn't even know that I've been coaching here for a month now," said San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc, member of the PBA's 25 Greatest Players and a member of the team that gave the Maroons their first and only UAAP title thus far in 1986.

"I'm just happy that I've already memorized the names of my players compared before when I needed a list," he added.

While San Beda remained atop the heap in Group A, National U continued to hoist the lead in the other group after nailing its fourth-straight victory at the expense of a listless Emilio Aguinaldo side, 93-52.

Dennis Villamor paced the Bulldogs with 16 points while Cameroonian Emmanuel Mbe had 12 points and 14 rebounds while playing minimal minutes as NU coach Eric Altamirano spread playing time to as many as 13 players.

"It’s not a gauge but I like our chances," said Altamirano.

The San Beda-Mapua game turned physical as advertised as the two teams played rough defense from the onset.
Save the date May 15, 2012, sixteen (16) members of the San Beda Alabang Junior Pep Squad will be competing in the Philippine National Games at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. The winner in the Philippine National Game (PNG) cheerleading competition will represent the country at the Asian finals in Tokyo, Japan next year.

The Red Lions swept their first five games and are heavily favored to get past the Mapua Cardinals in the 3:30 p.m. match of another explosive triple-bill in the tournament presented by Bostik Phils. Inc. in cooperation with Total Phils. Corp.

Mapua totes a 0-1 card in Group A of the two-division tournament backed by major sponsors Vulcaseal, TMS Ship Agencies, Inc., Kia Motors, Bayo, BDO, Nature's Spring, Molten and Oxycan.
