If he only had one wish for his birthday, Baser Amer would undoubtedly ask for a fourth straight championship for San Beda in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

And if he could have two wishes, the star point guard of the San Beda Red Lions who turned 21 on Sunday, would spend the other one on a win in their next game against San Sebastian on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.

“It’ll be a fitting gift,” Amer said on Sunday as the league-leading Red Lions get ready to face the Golden Stags at 6 p.m., seeking a 13th victory in 15 games that would gain them further separation from the rest of the pack.

“But I would really love to win the championship pa for my school and my team,” the third-year playmaker from Davao was quick to add. “That would be a better gift.”

Amer, who registered 21 points, five assists, and two rebounds in the Red Lions’ thrilling 78-76 overtime victory over University of Perpetual Help last Thursday, tries to lead his team anew against the streaking Stags, who have won their last four games.

San Beda trampled San Sebastian, 83-64, in the first round, but the Stags were without their own star guard Jamil Ortuoste, who was out with a sprained ankle that time.

Sidelined anew due to fever in the team’s 58-53 win over Lyceum the last time, Ortuoste had more time to rest in the Stags’ supposed game against College of St. Benilde last September 23 that was postponed due to inclement weather.

Expected to be back, Ortuoste teams up with fellow standout rookie CJ Perez in leading the fourth-running Stags in exacting revenge against the Red Lions for a ninth win in 14 games.

Perez showed why he is being compared to former King Stag Calvin Abueva by tallying all-around numbers of 28 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and one steal in San Sebastian’s 58-53 win over Lyceum.

Meanwhile, it's a battle royale in the NCAA junior's division as the unbeaten San Beda Red Cubs face the number two team, SSC-R Staglets at 2 p.m.

It’s the last few seconds of the game and everyone waits anxiously to see how things will turn out. Barely anything can be heard above the deafening yells of the students from the two schools, proudly wearing their colors, red for one school and green for the other.

One feels a sense of anticipation in the air as all eyes focus on the center of the arena. A young man, in red and white, jersey number 18, is in possession of the ball. Opponents are crowding him, trying to overpower him. With only 3.4 seconds left, he goes for it. The winning shot. His team wins!

This was the scene in the opening game of the 89th NCAA Basketball tournament last June 22 at the Mall of Asia Arena. The San Beda Red Lions were pitted against the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s Blazers, with the former barely scraping a win after a tough second half.

It was obvious that the win would not have been possible without San Beda’s Art dela Cruz, who plays starting power forward. He has proven himself to be a strong asset to the Red Lions. He’s good in both offense and defense.

In high school he played as power forward of the San Beda Red Cubs.

It was in the collegiate leagues where his true potential was realized. His talent shone when he played for the Ateneo Blue Eagles. Then he was recruited to the San Beda Red Lions.

The shift from the UAAP scene to the NCAA wasn’t a problem for Art, as proved by his strong performance with the Red Lions.

Asked how he finds playing for the San Beda Red Lions, he says, “It is a great honor but it comes with great responsibility.” continue reading here

While so much attention is focused on the campaign of the Red Lions in the 89th season of the NCAA basketball tournament, the Red Cubs are not far from getting noticed as well.

The defending champion San Beda Red Cubs hardly minded the absence of big man Arvin Tolentino as they crushed the University of Perpetual Help Junior Altas, 77-63, in the junior action.

With retired PBA cager Freddie Abuda’s son Franz taking charge under the boards, the Red Cubs hardly sweated it out as they went on to post their 14th  consecutive triumph.

Abuda became the big man in charge under the boards after two others, John Gumtang and Van Abatayo got into early foul trouble.

Joshua Caracut were among Red Cubs who scored in double digits, and he shot 18 points, while Ranbill Tongco had 15.

Franz, on the other hand, tallied only two, but he dominated the boards with 10 rebounds.

“Foul trouble sina Gumtang at Abatayo. So, I transferred Abuda to the big spot. Franz has been getting the rebounds even if he plays 3,” said Sison.

Tolentino, along with La Salle Greenhills standout Rashleigh Rivero, is part of the Philippines team which is seeing action in the FIBA world under 18 3×3 competitions starting today in Jakarta, Indonesia

Tongco came up with six points in the first period, and with Abuda patrolling the shaded lanes,  the Red Cubs went on to limit the Junior Altas to just 10 in the opening 10 minutes.

Taking a 25-10 edge in the start of the second quarter, Tongco and joined hands with Adven Diputado as they grabbed a 52-21 halftime spread.

The scores:

San Beda 98 - Caracut 18, Tongco 15, M. Diputado 12, Gumtang 11, Mocon 10, Abude 9, A. Diputado 9, Abatayo 7, Framil 5, Abuda 2, Decapia 0, De Villeres 0, Romero 0, Ancheta 0.

UPHSD 63 - Imperial 27, Udal 15, Entrampas 9, Amploquio 6, Migote 5, Neri 1, Alano 0, Sison 0, Umali 0, Tan 0, Corrales 0.

Quarterscores: 25-10, 52-21, 77-43, 98-63.

Perpetual Help came back from 21 points down to force overtime but it was San Beda getting the last laugh as they took a 78-76 victory in the extra period in a crucial clash of NCAA Season 89 leaders Thursday at the Arena in San Juan.

The Red Lions led 59-38 heading into the final period but the Altas erased it with a stunning 30-9 quarter after a contested three-pointer from Nosa Omorogbe dropped in the last two seconds of regulation.

But San Beda showed its championship poise in overtime, outscoring Perpetual 10-8 over the last five minutes to escape with the win.

San Beda improved to 12-2 for the season to stay on top of the heap while Perpetual missed out on the chance to take the lead and dropped down to 11-4 after losing for the first time in four games.

Baser Amer scored 21 points to lead San Beda while Arthur Dela Cruz added 16 and Rome Dela Rosa 12 for the league-leaders.

Reserve Kyle Pascual stepped up for San Beda, scoring the first four points of overtime. Perpetual’s Juneric Baloria hit a three-pointer to answer but Dela Rosa and Dela Cruz combined to give San Beda a 76-71 lead.

“I credit this game to our defense. We didn’t have Ola [Adeogun] in the overtime but our defense stepped up and our offense came off our defense,”

“Uulit-ulitin ko ha, it’s my boys who really played will tonight. They deserve this win. Art and Rome are playing well, Kyle stepped up when Ola was out. I thank the Lord for this win. Perpetual’s coach is goodand they really prepared for us.” said San Beda mentor Boyet Fernandez.

Omorogbe split from the line and Harold Arboleda scored on back-to-back drive to tie the game at 76 apiece but Dela Rosa found Dela Cruz for a short stab under the basket that gave the Red Lions the lead for good.

Perpetual had one more chance to tie or take the lead but Baloria missed a shot from the corner and time ran out on the Altas.

The scores:

San Beda (78) - Amer 21, Dela Cruz 16, Dela Rosa 12, Pascual 10, Abarcar 6, Mendoza 3, Ludovice 3, Koga 2, Adeogun 2, Abatayo 2, A. Semerad 1, Bonsubre 0.

UPHSD (76) - Omorogbe 23, Baloria 16, Arboleda 14, Alano 12, Thompson 5, Bitoy 4, Elopre 2, Dizon 0, Ylagan 0, Bantayan 0, Paulino 0, Jolangcob 0.

San Beda wasted no time putting the outcome beyond doubt this time.

Taken to the limit in their first meeting, the Red Lions coasted to a 65-46 victory over College of St. Benilde on Thursday to claim the provisional lead in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The three-time defending champion Red Lions underscored their status as the league’s best defensive team, limiting the listless Blazers to a measly two points in the first quarter where they zoomed to a 23-point lead that practically took the fight out of their opponents.

The Red Lions thus notched an 11th triumph in 13 games that put them a half-game ahead of archrival Letran.

“As I’ve said as always, I credit this game to the players. They played defense and they realized that our system is to play defense They started strong and the aggressiveness is there. I credit my starting five (Baser Amer, Ola Adeogun, Yvan Ludovice, Art Dela Cruz and Rome Dela Rosa) because they stepped their defense up. I also give credit to my players coming off the bench for stepping up. It was total team effort,” said Red Lions coach Boyet Fernandez, whose wards had to lean on the buzzer-beating alley-oop finished by Art dela Cruz to escape with a 71-70 win over the Blazers in the first round.

Dela Cruz stood at the forefront of the Red Lions onslaught anew as he emerged as the lone double-digit scorer with 14 points, while four others scored at least seven points.

The Blazers dropped to a 5-8 win-loss card in seventh place.

In one of the worst scoring outputs in a quarter in recent memory, the Blazers failed to make any of their 14 field goal attempts in the first period, with all their two points coming from the charity stripe by Jonathan Grey.

Benilde, which shot just 29 percent from the field overall, tried to make a comeback, but came no closer than 19 points.

“Again, we had 18 turnovers but we limited them to just eight turnover points. We really have to go for those rebounds as we gave CSB 12 offensive boards. Also, if we want to go further, we have to control our emotions. I credit the referees for taking good care of the game. Sana, macontrol din ng players ang emotions nila especially Abarcar,” added Fernandez.

The incident Fernandez was referring to was when JR Ongteco hammered Francis Abarcar to the floor. The Blazer was called for an unsportsmanlike foul whie Abarcar was restrained from creating a bigger scene due to the foul.

In juniors game, Red Cubs trounce junior rival LSGH Greenies to remain unbeaten 86-71. The Taytay based dribblers notched their 13th straight this season.

Defending champion San Beda tries to close in on a Final Four berth today when it squares off with surging St. Benilde in the 89th NCAA basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Game time is at 6 p.m. with the Red Lions gunning for an 11th victory in 13 games that will boost them to the solo lead ahead of the idle Letran Knights.

San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez said he doesn’t want his players to focus too much on where they are in the standings.

“Our goal is to reach the Final Four and get the twice-to-beat advantage,” said Fernandez.

But the Red Lions are expected to have their hands full against the Blazers, who narrowly lost to San Beda, 70-71, in their first round meeting last June 22.

With a 5-7 card, the Blazers hope to climb out of a three-team tie for fifth spot and move closer behind fourth-running San Sebastian, which battles Lyceum in the first game at 4 p.m.

St. Benilde has won five of its last seven games, but the Blazers’ Final Four hopes absorbed a blow following a 64-68 defeat to the Perpetual Help Altas last week.

PNP Lady Patrolers leaned on the heroics of Janine Marciano to turn back Far Eastern University, 25-20, 25-14, 20-25, 25-19, and keep its quarterfinal hopes alive in the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Marciano tallied 21 hits, including a smash at match point, as the Lady Patrollers bucked a lethargic third set to finally notch their first victory in six outings.

Playing her finest game since joining PNP, Thai import Patcharee Sangmuang came away with 23 points and seven digs, while Frances Molina finished with 14 hits as the Lady Patrollers tied idle Navy at the No. 6 spot.

The loss snuffed out the Lady Tamaraws’ hopes of reaching the quarterfinals after they suffered their sixth straight loss.

With the victory, PNP made its duel with Navy on Friday a virtual knockout encounter for the last quarterfinals berth.

College basketball leagues, particularly the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), have been and continue to be premier suppliers of national players. These two leagues, which Fullcourtfresh.com has been religiously covering since 2010, produced six of the 12 members of the 2013 Gilas Pilipinas team, which recently won the silver medal of the recent FIBA Asia Championship and booked a seat for next year’s Madrid FIBA World Championship.

If there were six UAAP-NCAA alumni from the 2013 Gilas, why can’t the two leagues provide its men to the next batches of Gilas Pilipinas?

In this this week’s edition of From The 15th Parallel, I have selected six current cagers, three each from the UAAP and NCAA, who may have the biggest chance of playing for flag and country.

Here are the potential Gilas players from the NCAA:

Baser Amer

The former San Beda Red Cub triple-double machine is now the king Red Lion for the three-time defending champions.

Standing at 5’10”, he has considerable size to match up against Asia’s bigger point guards. The best thing about Amer is his stability and the willingness to play the role of overall playmaker despite having the skills enough to make him the NCAA’s leading scorer. That kind of point guard is tailor-fit for FIBA competition. Read the full story here

The San Beda Red Cubs are six games away from sweeping the elimination round of the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) junior basketball tournament.

Two recent games brought them there, and they are almost sure of clinching the first of two finals slot.

Last Sept. 9, the Red Cubs came up with a 94-71 smashing of the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, they pulled off a no-bearing, 102-78, blasting of the Emilio Aguinaldo College-ICA Brigadiers.

With the two recent wins, the Red Cubs now hold the solo lead with a 12-0 win-loss record.

San Beda vs JRU

The Red Cubs quickly took charge right in the first period.

Ranbill Tongco played one of his above-par games on Monday, Sept. 9.

Tongco, who averages 14.78 points, led with 18 points and five assists as the Red Cubs went on to post their 11th straight win.

Teammates Adven Diputado and Arvin Tolentino fired 13 points for the Red Cubs, and Norrish Decapia provided 11 for the Mendiola dribblers.

Red Cubs coach JB Sison said everything turned out fine for them right in the first quarter when they took a 29-13 advantage.

Their running game clicked right from the start, with Tongco coming up with eight big points.

“They were getting their shots on the run, and the JRU was kind of slow in that game. And the boys were sharing the ball a lot,” said Sison.

Sison noted that the Red Cubs registered a season-high 25 assists in this game.

When the Light Bombers went to their zone defense in the third period, the Red Cubs turned to Diputado.

Diputado defied the JRU zone with his attacks to the hoops, and produced 11 points as SBC went on to take a commanding 77-48 spread.

San Beda vs EAC-ICA

Four members of the Red Cubs played above their averages this time around on Sept. 14, Saturday.

Tolentino, who is a part of the national 3×3 team, hit a gamehigh 21 points, and he usually norms 14.27 points.

Javee Mocon can do 10.4 points and nine boards per game. He was good for 11 points during the 20 minutes that he was on the floor.

Tongco was at his best again and chipped in 14.

Finally, Niko Abatayo went beyond his norm of 7.13 points by scoring 14 points.

Together, they helped the Red Cubs get off to another great start, and take a 29-15 advantage in the first period.

Making 22 points off their fastbreaks, the Red Cubs maintained a 14-point spread at halftime, 53-39. continue reading here

San Beda College took control of the second half to quell Emilio Aguinaldo College for a 71-64 win in the 89th NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Art de la Cruz had 16 points for the Red Lions, which also got double figures from three of their players.

Baser Amer scored 15 for San Beda, which claimed the top spot in the standings with a 10-2 win-loss slate. Ryusei Koga and Ola Adeogun combined for 25 points.

San Beda trailed by three points in the first half when the Generals erected a 33-31 halftime lead.

But the Red Lions established control in the third canto, blasting the Generals with a 58-46 lead. San Beda never looked back since.

Cedric Happi finished with 17 points for lead EAC, which dropped to 5-7.

The Red Lions’ next assignment will be against the CSB Blazers. The first time they met was last June 22 for the opening game of the season where San Beda edged the Blazers on an alleyoop play from Rome Dela Rosa to Art Dela Cruz in the paint for a one-point win.

As Fernandez says it, it’s a different scenario now.

“CSB came back from 0-5 and now they are nearly at fifth or sixth place. It will be a tough match. I know CSB will be ready for us. They’re really hot in the last few games. They just lost that game against Perpetual, but they came back and nearly won that game. We’ll be ready for CSB,” said Fernandez.

San Beda College Red Jins received four gold medals in the senior men's and women's division in the recently concluded MVP Best of the Best Taekwondo championships at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Devy John Singson, Dexter Anthony Rico and Jherald Rulete ruled in the senior men's group while Mary Pelaez Anjelay prevailed in the women's bracket to give San Beda four gold medals.

Other gold winners were Justin Eldridge Heaven, SBC, feather; Kenneth Poras, SBC, light; Astrologio John Gervin, SBC, welterweight; Bradley wane Sacayanan, SBC, light middle; Daniel Carlo Pere, SBC, middle; Meryll Mercado, SBC, light.

Defending champion San Beda guns for the solo lead in the NCAA Season 89 standings when it battles Emilio Aguinaldo College on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

The Red Lions will take on the Generals at 6 p.m. after the opener between San Sebastian and Mapua at 4 p.m.

With a 9-2 win-loss record, San Beda is hoping to break its tie with Letran at first place.

EAC, which has a 5-6 slate for a share of sixth place, is hoping to score an upset to boost its final four chances. The Generals, who are just a game behind fourth-place San Sebastian, escaped with a 70-68 triumph over Perpetual Help last Saturday.

Rivalries exist in many fields of human life, whether in love, employment, or business.

But rivalry is most played out in sports.

A classic example is tennis. Pete Sampras once said about his rival Andre Agassi, “Andre Agassi was my rival in the ’90s, and I think as we got older we sort of transcended the game. He was probably the best player I ever played over my career. There’s a list of players that were tough, but Andre, certainly, he was the most unique.”

Collegiate basketball is not exempt from rivalries.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association and the University Athletic Association are the two most popular collegiate tournaments in the Philippines. Most students who watch both leagues today are not aware that there was a time that UAAP member-schools were once members of the NCAA. In fact, Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle, National University, Far Eastern University, University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas were  founding members of the NCAA.

The last four schools went on to establish the UAAP.  Ateneo and La Salle battled it out in the NCAA, inside and outside the hard court, until their exit in the late 1970s and the early 1980s, respectively. Their transfer to the UAAP was triggered by melees with San Beda and Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

In trying to find the roots of the rivalries of today, I asked several alumni from different schools to paint a clear picture of the rivalry scene during the ’70s and ’80s.

Anton Estrada, an Atenean, said that there was no single dominant school in the 1970s. However, Ateneo won back-to-back championships in 1975-1976 and 1976-1977. In addition, Estrada considered La Salle, Letran and San Beda Ateneo’s toughest competitors.

Loud cheering section
Alberto A. Villarruz Jr., a Bedan cheerleader from 1978 to 1983, said that the rivalry between San Beda and Ateneo was quite evident during his time; the former was the team to beat.

Ateneo, he added, had everything going for it: It had experience and depth, and a loud cheering section.

During the championship games, he said, San Beda could hardly fill up a third of the Araneta Coliseum. Atenean cheerleaders and their band drowned out the competition, he added.

Today, the Ateneo and La Salle rivalry is probably the best known in collegiate basketball. According to Bobby Rius, a former Ateneo cager, this rivalry went beyond the court—it extended to which was the more prestigious school.

But from the ’30s til the ’70s, there was rivalry between San Beda and Ateneo in the NCAA because they had the most number of championships.

Former San Beda cager Maru Sotto, who played for the Red Lions from 1970 to 1974, said that San Beda’s rivalry with Ateneo was about athletics; it was limited to who had the most number of wins and championships and the better record.

But the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry has gone beyond the basketball court.  It has extended to which is the better school, and which exhibits more school spirit. To put it simply, the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry has become personal through the years.

In recent years, the UAAP’s Ateneo-La Salle rivalry has intensified. In contrast, the NCAA’s only remaining founding member, San Beda, has been left without a rival.

Even today the Red Lions consider the Blue Eagles as their rivals. But since they belong to different tournaments, they only relive their old rivalry during the summer invitational leagues.

Others may argue that Letran or even San Sebastian could be considered San Beda’s rival. But as Alberto A. Villarruz Jr. pointed out, as much as Letran and San Sebastian would like to look at themselves as San Beda’s rivals, it isn’t so, because rivalry is dictated by tradition and historical record

The La Salle Green Archers, the Arellano University Chiefs and the San Beda Red Cubs came up with contrasting victories Sunday to remain in contention for semifinal berths in the 11th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament.

Free throws from Julian Sargent and Benoit Mbala in the dying seconds enabled the Green Archers to escape with 60-69 beating of the Enderun Colleges Titans at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda College-Manila campus in Mendiola.

Renzy Busa fired 13 points for the Arellano University Chiefs, who turned back the San Sebastian College Stags.

Fil-Jordanian Sam Abuhijleh and Kenneth Alas tallied 16 and 15 points for the Red Cubs, who walloped the Malayan (Mapua) High School Red Robins, 86-68, in the junior action.

Sargent shot 19 points while Mustapah Haruna had 16 and Mbala made 13 for the Green Archers, who posted their fourth win in six games in Group B.

The Green Archers and the Titans both have the same record in third spot, and they stayed in contention for semis seats in their bracket with University of Perpetual Help Altas (5-1), the National University Bulldogs (5-2) and the San Beda Red Lions (4-1).

The Chiefs hiked their slate to 4-2 in Group A, and they are behind the Ateneo Blue Eagles (5-1) and the unbeaten Lyceum Pirates (5-0).

The Red Cubs moved two games closer to an eight-game sweep of Group with the Adamson Falcons, and both are top contenders for semis slots in their bracket.

The Titans were ahead in the final minute when Mbala and Sargent scored from the free throw line in the last 8.6 seconds.

Defensive plays by Haruna as the clocked winded down kept the Titans from making a final attempt.

San Beda showed dominance in NCAA 89 Table Tennis.

Red Paddlers & Junior Red Paddlers are still unbeaten at 8-0 while our Lady Red Paddlers ended round 1 with 8-0 win-loss record.

Defending champion San Beda breezed past Jose Rizal University, 68-54, to grab a share of first place in the NCAA Season 89 men’s basketball tournament Monday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Red Lions, seeking their fourth straight championship, got off to a fast start and built a commanding lead early before coming through a few bumps late.

“It was not as dominant as you see it,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez after his team tied Letran at 9-2.

“We took care of the ball in the first half but we turned the ball over a lot in the second half,” added Fernandez.

San Beda, which committed 15 errors in the second half alone, saw its 18-point lead cut to nine, 60-51, late in the fourth quarter after a three-point play by Marco Balagtas.

But the Lions were just too much in the end with Ola Adeogun and Baser Amer in the fold.

Adeogun scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while Amer had 15 points and four assists.

Balagtas led the Heavy Bombers, who slipped to fifth at 5-6, with 16 points, eight in the fourth quarter.

Who is the best defensive team in the ongoing NCAA men’s basketball tournament?

San Beda and Jose Rizal University dispute the right to such claim on Monday when they tangle in the first game of a featured doubleheader at The Arena in San Juan.

Tipoff is set at 4 p.m. with the three-time defending champion Red Lions vying for a ninth victory in 11 games and a share of the lead with Letran.

The Heavy Bombers, on the other hand, will try to gain solo fourth place with a sixth victory in 11 games.

The Red Lions, who lead the league in least points allowed with 61.9 points per game, face a Bombers side that relies on a suffocating pressure defense that forces rivals to commit 21.5 turnovers per contest.

The Red Lions defused the Bombers, 65-41, in the first round, but San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez insists their second meeting won’t be as easy.

“This is the second round. This is a different situation,” he said.

Nigerian slotman Ola Adeogun, who registered 23 points, 16 boards, and two blocks in their first meeting, is again expected to carry the load for the Lions and gain ample contribution from Davao-born playmaker Baser Amer and versatile forward Art dela Cruz.

Adeogun, Amer, and Dela Cruz, who are all in the Top 10 of the league’s statistical points leaders at the end of the first round, delivered in the Red Lions’ 81-63 victory over Lyceum two Saturdays ago.

On the other hand, the Bombers, coming off a 50-57 loss to College of St. Benilde, will continue to rely offensively on skipper Michael Mabulac, forward Jordan dela Paz, and guards Philip Paniamogan and Paolo Pontejos.

Pontejos, the former Red Lion who had a team-high 13 points in the first round against his former team, is expected to bounce back from a scoreless outing against the Blazers last Monday.

Every second counts.

The San Beda Sea Lions have a championship tradition. This year, however, competition gets tougher with the College of Saint Benilde Blazers wanting to end their streak.

In the 200-meter Backstroke, Sea Lion Anthony Linn Navarro is more than ready. Plus, he has the undying support of the sea of Red and White to back him up.

As soon as the gun fired, he gave it his all.

When he was just an inch away, the crowd of CSB was already celebrating. Anthony clearly heard their cheers and thought he had lost the battle.

"I was disappointed because the other team was chanting they won already," said the 15-year old Navarro.

Collapse

It was a close fight between San Beda and CSB. Nobody knew who won yet, not even the officials. When Anthony got out of the water, he suddenly collapsed due to tension and fatigue

"I really didn't know what happened that time. It also occured in the day two of the competition. I was just so tired but it was nothing serious."

The medics came to help him. In the back of his mind, Anthony was fulfilled. Though the Sea Lion didn't win, he is proud that he finished the race.

"I already knew the results but I was still satisfied because I didn't give up," he shared.

When the winner was announced, Anthony and all people present in the Rizal Memorial Stadium were astonished. They couldn't believe the results.

Record-breaker

"I was so surprised that I won the race. I was just so overwhelmed that time!" Anthony said.

But what's even more surprising is the fact that he broke the record by a mere .01 seconds. Navarro was stunned. He suddenly had the strength to get up to his feet and raise his arms.

"It was like my adrenaline that pulled me up. My teammates were all going crazy! It was unbelievable. After that, I was sent away from the pool to rest."

Navarro's 10 years of experience is nothing compared to what he has encountered in this year's NCAA season.

True enough, that single second changed his entire life. read full story here
