Fiery and sharp inside the court but a true gentleman off the court, San Beda forward Rome dela Rosa was the toast among collegiate stars yesterday as he was named the 2013 Model National Collegiate Player by the Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the ELJ Building of ABS-CBN.

Dela Rosa was given the distinction by PCCL chairman Rey Gamboa and executive director Joe Lipa for his “exemplary conduct on and off the court, and for attaining collegiate education while playing competitively thus upholding the high standards of performance and sportsmanship.”

The son of former PBA cager Romy dela Rosa skippered San Beda to its fourth straight NCAA title on his final year that earned the school an outright berth in the PCCL Final Four.

The Red Lions, however, settled for fourth in the tournament.

Past winners include Ateneo’s Nonoy Baclao (2009), Kirk Long (2011) and Nico Salva (2012) and University of Cebu’s June Mar Fajardo (2010).

What a way to kick off the famous Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo.

Last January 17, a charity game was held in Iloilo City that featured reigning four-peat NCAA champion San Beda and former five-peat UAAP king Ateneo at the packed University of San Agustin gym. Although the event was put together in no more than two weeks before the target date, tickets were sold out in just days. The sports-loving people of Iloilo City would not miss the rare chance of seeing two collegiate basketball giants colliding before their very eyes.

And the Blue Eagles and Red Lions certainly did not disappoint. They battled to a sizzling 40-minute explosive game that San Beda won, 106-104.

King Blue Eagle Kiefer Ravena was prepared to put on a show in the home province of his father Bong. He was, after all, the most recognized personality among all the participants. After the first half, the Sinag Pilipinas ace guard already tallied 18 markers. He was unstoppable with his fade away jumpers, “contra-tiempo” penetrations, and sharp three-point sniping. The home crowd was so thunderstruck with Kiefer’s astonishing hoops skills. As expected, he led all scorers after the match, finishing with 28 points.

San Beda’s hulking Nigerian center Ola Adeogun was also a big hit. As soon as he entered the gym, the crowd was already enthralled with his imposing presence. And as soon as he saw action, Iloilo City came to know part of the reason why the Red Lions continue to rule the NCAA. The 6’8” Lagos native was a monster in the game. Ateneo’s two African recruits, both also hailing from Nigeria – Chibueze Ikeh and Kingsley Ewenike – alternated on shackling Adeogun but he still imposed his will inside the paint. But what really brought the house down were two of his emphatic slams. One was an in-your-face jam that almost snapped the backboard off a fast break play. The other was a 180-degree dunk that sent the fans into a frenzy. Ola amassed 24 points and 12 boards.

Many personalities from both camps think that Ravena and San Beda star Baser Amer draw out the best from each other. The two topnotch guards have been rivals since their high school days. But off the court, they are best buddies. Amer is like an adopted family member of the Ravenas. He spends days in the Ravena residence occasionally. read the rest of the story here

In the 31 years of the Seaoil-Metro Manila Basketball League, the country’s third oldest high school basketball competition, the San Beda Red Cubs have dominated the tournament. In all previous 30 tournaments dating back to 1983 when Benjie Paras powered the Red Cubs to the title, San Beda has always made the semifinals cast.

When the semifinals gets going in one week’s time, not one of the four (A the NCAA team plus B, C & D) San Beda teams competing across four divisions will be suiting up on their home court, the venue of Seaoil-MMBL play.

The Red Cubs who recently won their fifth consecutive NCAA Juniors title and their 21st overall was eliminated last weekend by National University, 81-70, dropping them to 2-3. They were put on the brink with a crushing 75-71 loss to Chiang Kai Shek in the previous week.

The loss means that they will not be able to defending the Seaoil-National National Basketball Training Center championship that they won last year over Hope Christian High School.

The champion of the Seaoil MMBL goes to the finals of the Seaoil-NBTC that is a championship for the top high school programs all over the Philippines.

Former San Beda juniors head coach and Seaoil-MMBL Commissioner Ato Badolato attributed to other schools’ rapid improvement. “You cannot stay on top forever,” explained Badolato. “Teams are coached much better. Recruitment is much better. It’s also good for the league that other schools are stepping up.”

The loss to NU also means that will be the last game of blue chip player Arvin Tolentino in a Red Cubs jersey as he moves to Ateneo de Manila University for college.

This is why the game is played until the final seconds.

In a Metro Manila Basketball League match between NCAA Juniors champion San Beda and UAAP Juniors Final Four squad De La Salle Zobel, the Juniors Archers got off to a quick 19-17 first quarter lead after taking the game to the Red Cubs.

The Red Cubs, with many of their stars graduating from high school, looked mostly disinterested and were content to showboat. It took their second unit led by Norrish Decapia to get them back into the game in the second quarter. When that happened, the Junior Archers were unable to match the level of play and they fell behind for close to 20 points up to the halfway mark of the fourth period. The Junior Archers launched a scorching rally that saw them draw level.

In the final minutes of regulation, San Beda, behind Decapia and reserve Miguel Salcedo (who works as a statistician for the team but plays on Team C), carried the load for the Red Cubs. After John Ryan Gumtang put up SBC by three, 80-77, DLSZ’s Paco Rabat nailed a three from the right corner pocket with no time left to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, San Beda put in Niko Abatayo and Ranbill Tongco to join Decapia and gunner Adven Diputado to restore sanity to their offense. They staved of La Salle to win 89-87.

Decapia led San Beda with 18 points while the Red Lions-bound Diputado added 15.

Joaquin Banzon led DLSZ with 28 points while forward Alfred Sajulga added 14.

Weekend MMBL results (Jan 11 & 12):
SBC-C 69 vs. XAVIER-C 54
SJCS 54 vs. SBCA-A 57
SBC-B 87 vs. ISM-A 62
NU-A 81 vs. SBC-A 70
SSHS 65 vs. SBC-B 83

Iloilo City is bracing up for several sports events this month as added attraction to the Dinagyang Festival, with highlights celebrated on January 25-26.

Sports committee chairman Jojo Castro said the events will be kicked off with a goodwill basketball tournament on January 17 at the University of San Agustin gymnasium between University Athletic Association of the Philippine's (UAAP) Ateneo Blue Eagles, and the San Beda Red Lions, four-time defending champions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Dubbed as "Dinagyang Classico: The Epic Battle," the basketball match will showcase the strength, skill and power of athletes from UAAP and NCAA.

A fun run will also be held on January 19, and about 1,000 runners are expected to attend. Gun start will be at 4:30 a.m. at SM City. Cash prizes will be awarded to top runners, but all finishers will get T-shirts, certificates and medals.

Iloilo City will also host the first triathlon competition in Western Visayas.

To be held on January 25, the triathlon includes a 1.5 kilometer swim at the Anhawan Beach resort in Oton, Iloilo, 40-kilometers bike race from Anhawan to the municipality of San Miguel and back, and 10-kilometer run from Anhawan to the city.

Castro said that other sports activites set during the Dinagyang week are airsoft gun competition, taekwondo, swimming at the Iloilo sports complex, arnis and beach volleyball.

Other sports competition not included in the Dinagyang committee but will be held during the festival are golf, tennis and dart throwing.

Emilio Aguinaldo College stayed in contention for the semifinals of the 89th NCAA women's volleyball as it downed San Beda College, 25-18, 25-7, 24-26, 25-19, at The Arena in San Juan on Sunday.

Charmille Belleza came up with 23 points, Arian Angustia scored 18, while Yvanne Reyes and Maricar Aguares had 13 and 12 markers, respectively, for EAC.

The Lady Generals and the Lady Red Spikers are tied for fifth spot with 5-3 win-loss records.

EAC totally outworked San Beda, which missed the services of Ces Molina due to an injury.

The Lady Generals earned 12 block points against the two of SBC. They also had nine service aces compared to two by the Lady Red Spikers.

Janine Marciano led San Beda with 26 markers to hike her total to 183 points, eclipsing Honey Tubino of Perpetual Help in the individual scoring.

In the men's match-up, San Beda Red Spikers hand EAC Generals its first loss of the season, 25-23, 25-18, 40-38. The two teams played for almost 45 minutes in the third set. Lorenzo Capate led the Mendiola spikers with 26 points.

Emilio Aguinaldo College seeks to stave off early elimination against an injury-hit San Beda College side in a battle of slumping teams today in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The 12 noon clash is very crucial for the Lady Generals, who have now recorded three losses this season and must play their A-game versus the Lady Red Spikers to stay in the Final Four hunt.

EAC is trailing joint fourth placers San Beda and San Sebastian, both holding 5-2 records.

After leading most of the tournament, the Lady Red Spikers’ semifinals hopes are suddenly in limbo.

Despite a smashing 33-point performance by Janine Marciano, San Beda dropped its second straight game, a 22-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-27 loss to defending champion University of Perpetual Help System Dalta last Monday.

Marciano, who is now working double time with Ces Molina playing limited minutes due to injury, must draw enough support from Coline Malana and Mona Diolazo for the Lady Red Spikers to get back on track.

Debbie Dultra, who is now taking over from Robey Remigio who will sit out for the rest of the eliminations due to knee injury, should work hard on her setting for San Beda’s hitters to get their rhythm going.

The Lady Generals are coming off a 19-25, 23-25, 22-25 loss to the Lady Stags last Tuesday.

Charmille Belleza, Donna Mae Factor, Maricar Aguares and Arian Angustia will be the vital cogs for EAC, which is also mired on a two-game losing skid.

San Beda opens its bid for a fourth straight NCAA seniors football crown when it collides with Lyceum on Monday at the ASCOM pitch in Taguig City.

Game time is at 8 a.m. after a short opening ceremony.

In other games, Emilio Aguinaldo College squares off with Mapua at 10 a.m., followed by the tiff between College of St. Benilde and University of Perpetual Help at 12 noon.

Last season’s runner-up Arellano drew an opening-day bye.

With 20 titles under its belt, San Beda seeks to tie with former member La Salle’s 21 championships for the winningest football squad in the league.

Niel Dorimon and Miguel Caindec will be the main men for the Red Booters, who defeated the Arellano Chiefs in the one-game face-off to win a third straight crown.

Season 88 MVP Nhiboy Pedimonte, midfielder Ali Baldo and Jon Aaron Carlos, however, won’t be around for San Beda as they have already completed their playing years.

San Beda starts its title defense in the NCAA men’s football competition that kicks off on January 20 at the Ascom field in Taguig.

Bannered by 23-under Azkals standouts Neil Dorimon and David Fornea, the Red Booters are gunning for a fourth straight and 21st championship overall.

The Mendiola-based squad coached by Aris Caslib begin their campaign against Lyceum on opening day where perennial contender College of St. Benilde also sees action versus University of Perpetual Help.

Arellano, last season’s runner up led by Best Scorer Alvin Obrero, takes the field a day after the juniors’ division opens on January 22, as it takes on Mapua.

Only seven of the 10 member schools are participating in the tournament, hosted by Mapua, with Letran, Jose Rizal University, and San Sebastian unable to field respective squads.

The competition has a single-round format with the top four teams advancing to the next round, where they compete in another one-rounder.

The Finals of both divisions are on February 23.

(1st Update) University of Perpetual Help survived Janine Marciano and San Beda, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 27-25, in the NCAA Season 89 women’s volleyball tournament Monday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Altas improved to 5-2 and joined the Lady Red Spikers in third place but not after they withstood a 33-point outburst by Marciano, whose league-record output was built on 28 attacks and four service aces, one block, ten digs and four receptions..

Despite the win, Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar knows his team still has more to show.

“The players are still trying to figure out each other. I’m still adjusting every position. But we’re happy with the win. We really wanted to end the match in three or four sets.”

San Beda played without its setter Robey Remigio, who was sidelined with a knee injury.

Marciano, who surpassed teammate Ces Molina as the league's best scorer, single-handedly did all the work for San Beda as Molina was only played sparingly due to injury.

Honey Royse Tubino unleashed a career-best 30 points while Shaira Cabriana had 21 points, including the match-clinching drop that completed a Perpetual comeback from a 12-17 deficit in the fourth set.

Reigning MVP Norie Diaz had 15 points, including four aces.

San Beda’s setback left Arellano and College of St. Benilde sharing the top spot with identical 5-1 records.

Erstwhile unbeaten San Beda College and defending champion University of Perpetual Help System Dalta clash today at resumption of the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Red Spikers hope to bounce back from their first loss of the season before the Christmas break. After a school-best 5-0 start, San Beda suffered a 25-23, 24-26, 15-25, 25-19, 7-15 decision to San Sebastian College last Dec. 6.

But the Lady Red Spikers need to bring on their A-game to neutralize the three-peat seeking Lady Altas in the televised duel set at 12:30 p.m.

The loss dropped San Beda into a three-way tie with Arellano University and College of Saint Benilde at 5-1.

Service specialist Janine Marciano, who struggled against the Lady Stags, is again expected to lead the Lady Red Spikers.

Tied with San Sebastian and Emilio Aguinaldo College at fourth place (4-2), Perpetual Help is in a must-win situation with another loss to send the Las PiƱas-based spikers to the brink of elimination in the single-round preliminaries.

Ace attacker Honey Royse Tubino and reigning MVP Norie Diaz are tipped to play key roles for the Lady Altas.

The defending champion San Beda Red Lions needed an extra period to get past the Jose Rizal University-A Heavy Bombers, 57-56, last Dec. 15 in the 10th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup basketball tournament.

Six-foot-three Arnaudt Noah sank two winning charities in the last 45 seconds to power the Red Lions to their first win  at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City.

This allowed the Red Lions to bounce back from their 69-70 loss to the Mapua Cardinals.

They now have a 1-1 win-loss slate in Group B.

The Heavy Bombers, who now have 2-1 card, trailed 54-57 in the ensuing play, and tried to forced another tie when Schever Benavides brought JRU closer with his drive.

Donald Tankoua led the Red Lions with 25 points, and the match into overtime with his freebies as the regulation period ended, 46-all.

The Mapua Cardinals are leading their bracket (2-0) with the College of St. Benilde Blazers after they posted a 70-69 beating of the Red Lions, last Dec. 14.
