Lions Eye another Title Run

Moments after winning their record 15th NCAA title, San Beda coach Frankie Lim was nearly floored with the question: Is the current team the greatest squad produced by San Beda?
“I guess the result will tell you (that we’re the greatest team),” said Lim. “And I have five new guys on my team that are within my rotation this year and that means there’s more to come.”
After completing a perfect 18-game sweep, the first since San Sebastian bagged a five-peat with a clean slate in 1997, the Red Lions look unstoppable for another title run next season with an almost intact lineup.
Only team captain Borgie Hermida will be missed next season. He is set to join Barako Bull in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
San Beda still has Most Valuable Player Sudan Daniel, Garvo Lanete, Jake Pascual, Rome dela Rosa David and Anthony Semerad in its roster in its bid to match Letran’s record 16 championships.
San Beda, which won its fourth title in the last five seasons, surpassed Ateneo for second on the all-time list.
In Hermida’s place, the Red Lions will add do-it-all point guard Baser Amer, who led the Red Cubs to their second straight title, earning the MVP trophy in the process.
“We have him (Amer) and we’re also looking at (Amer’s teammates) Al Gotladera, Chris Javier and Von Chavez,” said Lim. “We’ll try to get good balance on this team next year and will try to make it stronger.”
San Beda won by an average of 20.7 points in the finals.
Daniel, who was clobbered last year by the Stags’ rugged defense, came back a better player, winning two MVP trophies.
“How can you elaborate more when the guys receives the MVP award,” Lim said. “Complete turnaround from last season and you have to admire him for his persistence, for his commitment to get better.”
