San Beda Grabs NCAA Taekwondo Title

San Beda College retained their men's title but lost their women's title to College of St. Benilde Wednesday in the finals of the 87th NCAA taekwondo tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Ron Servito, a 19 year old second year Information Technology student led the Red Jins to their third consecutive crown as he garnered the gold medal in the middleweight division.

Aside from Sevito, other San Beda jins who went home with a gold medal are finweight Ralph Eric Bunda, flyweight Devy John Singson, and last year's MVP Ron Michael David in the lightweight class.

The Red Jins also snared four silver medals and two bronzes, which paved the way for their targeted three-peat, upon amassing a total of 461.5 points, way ahead of the second-place CSB Blazers, which won two gold medals, courtesy of bantamweight Glen Francis Gacal and featherweight Ronnel Arvin Yadao, letting them finish with 344.75 points.

Event host San Sebastian College Stags finished third in the tournament with a total of 249.79 points, with the entire event under the supervision of the Philippine Taekwondo Association with national coach Dindo Simpao as tournament commissioner.

In the women's division, the Lady Blazers amassed a total of 323 points to seize the crown from San Beda College Lady Jins, who settled for second after winning the last two years. The dethroned champs tallied 241.5 points all in all.


The Letran Lady Knights finished third with a total of 234 points.

Bacolod native Ma. Isabel Mora, an 18 year old bantamweight who was adjudged as the tournament MVP, led the Lady Blazers to victory.

Aside from Mora, other Lady Blazers who delivered gold medals for the team are Kiela Therese Montinala, who beat  last year's MVP Reyna Jean Teresa Alarva of San Beda in the lightweight class finals, Karla Krizia Ramos (welterweight) and Chalene Mari Vistudazo (middlle heavyweight).

Meanwhile, CSB La Salle Greenhills also retained the juniors plum after compiling a total of 428.25 points, far ahead of second placer Letran Squires (282.99 points) and third placer Emilio Aguinaldo College Brigadiers (193.91 points).

Fourth year high school student Kirk Barbosa, who won the gold medal in the lightweight category, was picked as the tournament MVP.  

Other gold medal winners for LSGH aside from Barbosa are Paolo Louie Jazmines (featherweight), Carl Angelo de Jesus (light middleweight) and  Karlo Angelo de los Santos (middle heavyweight).
