Boyet Fernandez Is Red Lions' New Head Coach
After a single championship season, Ronnie Magsanoc verbally tendered his official resignation as head coach of the NCAA's San Beda College Red Lions last December 15. Magsanoc, a former San Beda Red Cub, will be replaced by current NLEX Road Warriors head coach, Meralco Bolts assistant head coach, and team consultant Teodorico “Boyet” Fernandez III, effective immediately, Inboundpass has learned.
Reasons for Magsanoc's prompt departure from the Red Lions den were not disclosed, as of posting.
Magsanoc, who took over last summer for Frankie Lim, guided San Beda to an 18-3 record in the elimination round of NCAA Season 88, before piloting them to their 17th championship against the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, making the founding school the winningest team in league history.
“It’s been a great run, I really enjoyed my time with San Beda”, said Magsanoc, in a personal interview with Inboundpass prior to stepping down as mentor of the three-peat NCAA champs.
Fernandez was formerly head coach of the now-defunct Sta. Lucia Realtors PBA team from 2007 to 2010, a tour of duty that included a Philippine Cup title in 2007-2008 season.
After the club disbanded, Fernandez had a short stint with the UP Fighting Maroons of the UAAP, going 0-12 in Season 73. He then became the head coach of the PBA D-League's NLEX Road Warriors, having piloted them to all three conference titles in the league's existence.
Currently, the Road Warriors are league-best 9-1 in the on-going 2012-13 Aspirants Cup.
Before settling on Fernandez, Ateneo Blue Eagles assistant, former Ateneo Blue Eaglets head coach and current Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters assistant Jamike Jarin, was also considered for the position.

Dear Mr. Boyet Fernandez,
ReplyDeleteHi, this is Glenn Catan. I was the person you met last November 2010. I was the one who talked to you that your friend Sydney Encarnacion recomended me to you to play basketball. Did you remember when Meralco played vs Alaska, that was the time when we talked to each other at the Victorias Basketball Coliseum. I was not able to apply for the 2013 PBA Rookie Draft, because I did not know it was already the deadline of submission of application forms and also I did not know where to get the application form. May I ask you a favor that I will try out on your basketball team, the Meralco Bolts. Sydney Encarnacion said I am a very good player, so can I ask you a favor that I will try out on your basketball team. Thanks for your consideration. My contact no. is 09355485143.
