Mocon, Tongco Set To Join Red Lions
San Beda landed two key players from its multi-titled high school squad in Javee Mocon and Ranbill Tongco to beef up the Red Lions roster for the next NCAA season.
San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez confirmed that Mocon and Tongco have recently committed to join the Red Lions after leading their high school team to a fifth straight crown last year.
“As of now, we took two Red Cubs who committed to us in Javee Mocon and Ranbill Tongco,” Fernandez said.
The commitments obtained by the Red Lions from Mocon and Tongco came after Tolentino decided not to play for San Beda and, instead, joined Ateneo in the UAAP.
Even though the Red Lions failed to get Tolentino, Fernandez was glad to have the two Red Cubs as they gun for a fifth straight title this year in Season 90 of the country’s oldest collegiate league.
Fernandez said Mocon, who averaged 10.5 points and 7.4 rebounds for the Red Cubs last season, is a key addition after the departure of small forward Rome de la Rosa, who played his final season in 2013.
The San Beda coach is confident Mocon can fill the gap even though he played as a power forward in high school.
“Javee will really fill up the spot which Rome left behind. Javee is playing four in the juniors but with his talent and attitude, I think he will have no problem adjusting to the three,” said Fernandez.
As for Tongco, the point guard averaged 13.5 points for the Red Cubs last year. But Fernandez admitted that Tongco is a project with Baser Amer and a host of other point guards still with the Red Lions.
“He will fortify the point guard position in the future. I know that we have so many point guards but still, we are looking at him to be the future of San Beda,” said Fernandez.
Fernandez said he is still looking for more players to beef up their core.
