Sudan Daniel showed another glimpse of his potential on a week when the San Beda Red Lions clinched the first Final Four berth in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament.
Daniels, who is a leading MVP contender, produced another rare triple-double performance that powered the Red Lions to 92-61 rout of the ousted University of Perpetual Help Wednesday.
The 22-year-old Daniel, a product of Compton Dominguez High School in California, pumped in 10 points, 10 rebounds and 12 blocks in a performance that propelled the Red Lions into their fifth straight semifinal appearance.
For his valiant effort, Daniel was named Accel/Filoil NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week presented by Gatorade and Terrilicious Meat Products.
“He’s a lot better than last year and he's really playing very well,” said San Beda mentor Frankie Lim of his ward, whose 12 blocks was the league’s highest in recent years.
Incidentally, Daniel also scored his first triple-double effort of the season against the Altas.
Daniel dropped 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks in the Lions’ 101-77 win over the Altas in the first round of elims last July.
“For me it’s nothing personal (playing against Perpetual),” Daniel, who already had seven of his 12 blocks in the first half, said. “I promised myself I will protect the rim and the paint at all cost.”
Daniel came out as the second best in the race for the coveted MVP plum with a total statistical average of 54.6 points – not far behind than San Sebastian College’s Calvin Abueva (55.6 points).
Daniel, who is looking to become the second foreign player to win the MVp plum after his predecessor Nigerian Sam ekwe, leads everyone in blocks (4), second in rebounds (11.6) plus a 10-point per game norm.
