Anjo Caram: The Lion that roared
by Paul Palmero

Beyond basketball, he looks forward to going into business-to help people gain employment

THE 86TH NCAA basketball season proved to be another enduring test of stamina and strength for its teams. But what made it quite historic was San Beda Red Lions’ super-charged domination—it was effortless. Its sweet Sweep-18 just can’t be ignored.

During Game 2 of the best-of-three playoffs, the Mendiola-based superpower was in its element. With a flurry of prayers and generous support from the school community, the Red Lions were just invincible. Everyone in the sea of red cheerfully went home with an easy “A”—A for amazing, among many others—for a fiercely fought and well-deserved victory.

Antonio Jose “Anjo” Hechanova Caram was right in the center of that fight.

The Marketing and Corporate Communications junior dribbles a winning basketball career—and a promising business career.

Having come a long way from his native Iloilo, the 19-year-old point guard remains humble in his niche in collegiate sports.

Having won his second NCAA crown this year—in an epic 18-0 game sweep —he earned a spot in collegiate sports history.

The formula is easy. Caram is humble enough to recognize shortcomings but quick to reshape his game. “There are times when I did not play well during practice sessions,” he shares, “but we played as a team and brought home the crown.”

As a result, the Red Lions bludgeoned the San Sebastian Stags with an 85-70 win.

His determination was also seen in the recent Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) against De La Salle. Though San Beda failed to reach the finals, he and the team showed strong Bedan fighting spirit till the end, and accepted defeat gracefully.

Thanks to the inspiration by family, teammates, the Bedan community and alumni, and to the valuable mentoring of coach Frankie Lim, Anjo roars with success.

Hear it from him.

Defining himself:

As a son - “Loving”

As a student - “Diligent”

As a Red Lion - “Tough”

On San Beda’s 86th NCAA victory:

“It was much sweeter because we were able to sweep all 18 games to make NCAA history.”

Basketball as a medium:

“It allows me to be focused and disciplined.”

Braving challenges:

“You just need perseverance and determination.”

Good sportsmanship and teamwork:

“Good sportsmanship is when a person accepts defeat positively and greets his opponents on their victory. Teamwork is when a player thinks not only of himself but also his teammates.”

Playing for another team:

“I can’t imagine myself playing for other schools because I love my school.”

Advice to future basketball players and athletes:

“Believe in yourself. Believe you can do it. Practice hard. Have focus and be disciplined. Above all, pray hard.”

Life after college:

“I’d be a businessman… I want to apply what I’ve learned in school and help other people gain employment.”
