Mang Roger -from ‘balut’ vendor to Bedan icon
Since 1976, he’s been a fixture at the school; now, Bedans pay tribute to him through a shirt.
WHO is Mang Roger? For Bedans, especially those studying in Mendiola, he is the balut vendor. He has become the unofficial Bedan icon by being always present at Red Lion games.
A Bedan’s NCAA opening would not be the same without him. Forever the lucky guy being given a Patron ticket, Mang Roger has always been there to support the school team—while waving to his many suki.
His balut is considered a Bedan delicacy. He has been selling balut since 1976, when San Beda was still an all-boys school and the grade school and high school departments were still in Mendiola. Come 3 p.m., the would students come out and go straight to Mang Roger, then stationed by the phone booth, selling his balut and chicharon merienda.
He has become the human face of Bedan brotherhood, it is in his small place where you see all three levels come together and just have a fun chat with him.
The kids would ask their “kuyas” to open their bag of chicharon or even leave their bags with him while they go and play. Mang Roger would call on them once their school buses are ready to leave.
When his wife was stricken with cancer a decade ago, a lot of Bedans pitched in to help, and also offered assistance when his wife passed away.
Now, Bedans of all stripes are showing their gratitude to this simple man for his never-ending support to the community with the “Mang Roger” shirt.
Designed by Red Trend, the trendy shirt pays tribute to Mang Roger while also offering help in a more concrete way. Ten percent of the sales will go to him. Now, Mang Roger jokes he can finally buy a washing machine.
