EIGHT TEAMS, all from the NCAA and UAAP, locked horns in the knockout, quarterfinal round of the 7th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup at the Arellano University gym last Sunday, March 6. When the dust settled, San Beda, NU, JRU and Adamson advanced to the semifinals in contrasting yet convincing fashion.

San Beda 78, Letran 71
Reigning NCAA undefeated champion San Beda College survived Colegio de San Juan de Letran’s upset bid from the charity stripe. The Knights gave a good account of themselves and even took the lead, 68-67 on a Kevin Alas jumper with 2:41 in the final period before the Red Lions took it strong to their rivals, who were already mired in the penalty. San Beda’s next six points all came from the foul line, and a Jake Pascual jumper with 1:17 in the game handed coach Frankie Lim’s unit a comfortable 75-68 edge. Nigerian big man...
Ola Adeogun, who will only be eligible for NCAA play in 2012, more than made up for fellow frontliner Sudan Daniel’s average outing with 18 points. Alas, meanwhile, paced Letran with 18 markers as well.

Schedule
Sunday, March 13 at the Arellano University
2:30 PM Adamson Falcons vs. San Beda Red Lions
