Baser Amer: A Cub Ready To Lead The Pride

Like most Filipino boys, Amer started to play basketball very early. He always knew that he wanted to be a point guard, as he found effectiveness in distributing the ball. He realized even then that San Beda was his school of choice.

“Ever since then, San Beda was very strong. They always win," he shares.

When asked why he stayed with the Red Lions, Amer was quick to point out the support of the San Beda community.

“The community is always willing to help," he adds.

He does admit that it’s not all been roses as he begins his NCAA seniors’ experience. The 18-year-old admits that the level of play is very different in this division.

“I find it a bit difficult because this is already high -evel basketball. It’s not so physical in the juniors," said the native from Davao.

Amer had his baptism of fire in the game against the Blue Eagles. As the point guard for the Red Lions, he was tasked to guard veterans Eman Monfort, Kirk Long, and Ateneo High School standout Kiefer Ravena. He defended, he tried to stay in front, and he chased through screens. On the offensive, it was apparent that he was a natural point guard. Getting to their half court, he orchestrated, he looked for the open man.

Having played against Ateneo, Amer now looks forward to competing against the De La Salle Green Archers and the San Sebastian Stags. Always looking for high-level competition, Baser hopes to pit himself against the best, as he believes that’s the perfect way for him to grow and get better.

In one sequence in their game against Ateneo, a scramble in the paint resulted in a three pointer by Baser. The next sequence had him spotting an open Melo Lim for another three. Just another day at the office for the former King Cub now seeking to lead a much larger pride.
