Like father, like son. This best describes how Rome Dela Rosa idolizes his father, Romeo "Romy" Dela Rosa.
The elder Dela Rosa was a former professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), playing for Shell Rimula X from 1989 to 1993 and later on for Sta. Lucia.
He also played for the Negros Slashers, Davao Eagles, and Pampanga Dragons in the now defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA).
The younger Dela Rosa, meanwhile, currently plays for the San Beda Red Lions in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Rome came from San Diego, California to play basketball in the Philippines. He was recommended to San Beda and started playing as small forward last year and is now considered one of the team's go-to guys.
Like any scion of a noted basketball player, Rome admits that expectations from other people are unavoidable but he manages to focus on his goal.
"There is always a pressure on my part because the name is already there. A lot is expected from me but my dad usually tells me to just relax and don't be too excited," says the 6-foot-4 Rome.
Rome says he always looks up to his dad as an inspiration.
"I learned everything about basketball from him and he always reminds me to have fun in every game," says Rome, who still has two more remaining years in the NCAA.
Aside from his father, Rome's uncle, Ruben dela Rosa, was also a former professional player who suited up for the Negros Slashers and Manila Metrostars.
Rome shares how his family supports his career although they can only see his games online since the family is staying in California.
He says he used to play for a high school varsity team in California where the games are a bit different. "The games here are actually more physical unlike in the US where the referee calls foul right away," he says.
Rome adds that he was able to adapt with the culture here, especially with his fellow San Beda players which he considers his "second family."
He says he still has many things to improve on like his shooting skills. "I always want to improve myself to give justice to the name I carry."
