Garvo Lanete banged in 25 points for the defending champions.
Lanete struck hard in the second half as the Red Lions scored their 13th win in 15 matches in a game, that was later placed under protest by the Blazers (see related post). The second-running San Beda Lions are now a full win ahead of the Letran Knights (12-3).
The 6’2” Lanete had eight points in the third period, where he joined hands with Rome de la Rosa, Dave Marcelo and Paolo Pontejos in a decisive 9-0 run that widened the Lions’ 51-48 lead to 12, 60-48, in the last two minutes of the quarter.
Lanete then hit nine points in the final period to keep the Red Lions ahead at 70-62 in the last five minutes.
Dave Marcelo scored 18 points and hauled 11 rebounds for San Beda, which got a chance to pull away again behind his two free throws in the last 2:04.
CSB coach Richard del Rosario placed the match under protest, referring to the incident after the referee imposed a three-minute rest period for players with suspected injuries.
Lastimosa was sent out after the team’s physical therapist came over to check on him. Del Rosario explained that the protest was meant to clarify the implementation of the rules.
Red Lions coach Frankie Lim said he never expected Lastimosa to play, but it hardly mattered since Lanete and Marcelo were able to step up.
The Blazers fell to 5-10 at sixth place.
