Garvo, Anthony Named NCAA's Players Of The Week
San Beda's top gunner Garvo Lanete and the returning Anthony Semerad showed their shooting prowess to help the Red Lions nail the Final Four's second twice-to-beat edge to share the ACCEL/3XVI NCAA Press Corps Players of Week award presented by Gatorade.
With Lanete and Semerad leading the way, the defending champion Red Lions joined chief rival San Sebastian as the teams that enjoy the Final Four incentive. The Mendiola-based squad destroyed the Letran Knights, 84-68, on Friday.
The veteran Lanete waxed hot from the field exploding for 28 points while Semerad delivered the crucial baskets to douse Letran's late rally and extend the Red Lions' domination over the Knights for the 12th straight time since 2007.
Lanete also had five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block while Semerad, playing his second game after returning from calf injury, finished with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
"Again, big game for Gabo (Lanete). My bigs we're in foul trouble 70 percent of the time so I also relied on my players off the bench like Anthony Semerad," San Beda coach Frankie Lim said of his wards.
When Letran trimmed San Beda's 20-point lead to 71-61, with 4:54 remaining in the last period, Semerad ended the Knights' comeback with a three-pointer that he followed up with three straight free throws.
Lanete then put up the finishing touches when he scored five straight points to seal the outcome of the game.
With the win, San Beda's 15th in 17 games, the Red Lions are now only down half-a-game behind San Sebastian's 16-1 record.
It was the second time this season that two players from the same team shared the weekly plum since teammates Ian Sangalang and Calvin Abueva took the citation two months ago.
