Sources Say Ronnie Magsanoc Is Red Lions New Head Coach?
“The Point Laureate” will make his collegiate coaching debut at the San Beda Red Lions this year.
Ronnie Magsanoc will take over the coaching reins from Frankie Lim as San Beda's senior basketball coach, hoping to keep the school's winning tradition when Season 88 of the NCAA unfurls this June.
Multiple sources privy to top San Beda patron and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan said Magsanoc gained the former's nod and will fill the void left by Lim, who recently resigned after steering the Mendiola-based school to four championships and a runner up finish.
"Ronnie Magsanoc," replied three separate sources close to Pangilinan when asked by The STAR regarding who will be Lim's successor.
"The school will make it official with announcement perhaps tomorrow," said another source, a San Beda insider who requested anonymity because he has no authority to make the announcement.
"Magsanoc is really the first choice of MVP," added the same source, referring to Pangilinan.
The 45-year-old Magsanoc played high school ball at San Beda and suited up for the University of the Philippines Maroons alongside Benjie Paras and Eric Altamirano. He helped win their only UAAP championship to date in 1986.
Magsanoc played in the PBA for 14 years and won several championships with Formula Shell, Sta. Lucia Realty and Purefoods. He is among the PBA’s 25 Greatest Players.
