Mendiola Dribblers Defuse Heavy Bombers
Two-time defending champion San Beda used great defensive effort to detonate Jose Rizal University, 62-37, in NCAA Season 88 action Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Red Lions allowed a record-low 15 points in the first half. They hounded the Heavy Bombers to miss all 13 of their shots from beyond the arc. JRU top scorer Nate Matute, who came into the game averaging 21.3 points, was limited to just four.
“They could not get their confidence early,” said San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc. “Yun ang naging key namin kung paano sila babantayan. They kept on missing too many point blank shots.”
San Beda, which tied San Sebastian at the top of the standings with a 6-1 win loss record, led by as much as as 30 points, 60-30, late in the game.
“We’re happy defensively. That’s our baseline foundation. You see, pantay-pantay and mga teams ngayon, halos lahat may five-year veterans. I thought they had a very good game plan, ‘di lang tumama,” Magsanoc said.
Kyle Pascual led all scorers with 14 points, Ola Adeogun had 12, while Art Dela Cruz and Ryusei Koga added ten apiece for San Beda.
JRU’s bigman Ronnel Carampil was the lone Heavy Bomber to score in double figures with 10.
The Heavy Bombers will wrap up their first round schedule on Aug. 9 when they meet this year’s host Letran while the Red Lions will still play the Stags on Aug. 9 and the Knights on Aug. 11 in the first round.
