San Beda Battles Arch-nemesis Letran
Reigning titlist San Beda tries to end its first round campaign with a bang as the Red Lions shoot for a share of the lead against Letran today in the 88th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Hostilities start off at 6 p.m. after Mapua and Arellano University, both toting 3-5 marks, clash at 4 p.m.
The Red Lions are hoping to bounce back from a stinging 71-80 loss to San Sebastian Stags Thursday night, a defeat that dropped them to solo second with a 6-2 card.
San Sebastian, on the other hand, improved to 7-2 to tie Jose Rizal University for the lead.
In that game, Ronald Pascual erupted for 28 points while last season’s Most Valuable Player Calvin Abueva had another monster game of 21 points, 21 rebounds and nine assists.
Abueva, who is expected to be in the top five in the PBA Rookie Draft slated this Sunday, currently leads the scoring, rebounding and assist departments after averaging 20.4 points, 17.3 rebounds and 6.5 assists a game.
San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc, however, does not want to dwell much on their last outing, saying they have a tough task at hand.
Like San Beda, Letran is also expected to play hard to make up for a 101-83 loss to the Bombers.
But for the Red Lions to prevail, Magsanoc must squeeze the best out of Anjo Caram, Baser Amer, Jake Pascual and Ola Adeogun – the league’s current top blocker.
One reason why Letran lost miserably the last time was because it turned the ball 28 times which infuriated coach Louie Alas.
Kevin Alas must also step up along with Kevin Racal, Mark Cruz and Jam Cortes if they want to improve their 4-4 record.
