"San Beda Is In Good Hands" - Coach Ronnie
San Beda is in good hands, said Ronnie Magsanoc.
Magsanoc lauded the appointment of Boyet Fernandez as the new head coach of the Red Lions in the coming NCAA men’s basketball season.
“Coach Boyet is a multi-titled coach both in the PBA and D-League. The Red Lions are in good hands with him,” said Magsanoc, who resigned last month to spend more time with his family and concentrate with his role as assistant coach to Ryan Gregorio with Meralco in the PBA.
“He was already a consultant last year. I am very positive that he is ready to push forward the Red Lions basketball program in 2013,” Magsanoc said about Fernandez, who is also a Bolts assistant.
Fernandez was officially named as the new San Beda coach on Wednesday after getting a call from Red Lions sports patron Manuel V. Pangilinan, who also bankrolls Meralco.
“I’m very grateful to Boss MVP,” said Fernandez, who was a consultant to Magsanoc with the Red Lions when they swept Letran in the best-of-three finals.
“It’s really a big challenge for me. The pressure will really be there but with my experience last season with Coach Ronnie, I think that really helped me a lot for this job.”
Fernandez is hoping to be the third coach in as many years to lead the Red Lions to a title, following in the footsteps of Magsanoc and Frankie Lim.
“Big shoes to fill yung kina Coach Ronnie and Frankie. Mabigat but I’m ready for the challenge,” said Fernandez, who once coached UP Fighting Maroons in the UAAP, ending with a 0-12 win-loss record in 2010.
Fernandez won a PBA crown with Sta. Lucia Realty, beating Purefoods (now San Mig Coffee), in the 2007-08 Philippine Cup finals. He has led the NLEX Road Warriors to three straight PBA D-League titles.
