Finally, the NCAA will begin its 89th season next week. This afternoon we were privileged to have been introduced to the members of the San Beda Red Lions who will attempt to win the NCAA Seniors Crown for the FOURTH consecutive year:

Here is my take on the members of the team:

STARTERS:

19 ROME DELA ROSA – SG, 6’3” - This year's team captain. The team's best open court player. Automatic two points on fastbreak plays. Kamikaze drives in transition and along the base line are also a sight to behold. Has been improving on his jumper and can knock down three pointers. Also a great perimeter defender, always tasked to defend the opposing team's best scorer.

15 KYLE PASCUAL – C, 6’6” - Co-captain this year. Fundamentally sound big man, not flashy at all; Tim Duncan-like game. Owns a great medium range jumper that he usually takes along the baseline. Better than average rebounder and shot blocker.

7 BASER AMER - PG 5’11”- Arguably college basketball's best at his position. Has been more offense-minded in the pre-season and may have to take more of the scoring load this year. No slouch on defense as he has saved the team many times by his steals and big game plays. Has been getting busy lately off the boards, too. But make no mistake, his best talent is running the team.

4 RYUSEI KOGA – SG- 5’9”- Fastest player on team, could probably win in the sprints at track. Has gained prominence since last year's Finals and has blossomed into a deadly shooter and fast break finisher. Tenacious defender who sometimes is tasked with defending opposing players much bigger than he.

18 ARTHUR DELA CRUZ – PF, 6’4”- Smart, tough and meaner than he looks. Super Six stalwart easily can produce double digit points and rebound numbers. Owns a lethal jump hook from ten feet out. Great passer and finisher; so good at making plays from his spot that he is also getting known as an excellent point forward.

RESERVES:

5 FRANCIS ABARCAR – SG, 5’9” - Finals MVP as a Red Cub and Super Six member, Utoy has shown that he deserves a spot this year by his outstanding play, which included two consecutive 20-point games that resulted in wins. Tough guard who doesn't back down; must curb the urge to immediately retaliate at an offending opponent.

6 ANTHONY SEMERAD – SF, 6’5” - Quick-release shooter is a three-point threat and needs to show more of that to open up the interior. Size makes him a good perimeter defender but needs to improve on lateral movement and quickness.

8 JAYPEE MENDOZA – PF, 6’4” - Has performed well in the preseason. Former national player possesses a good medium range jumper and has a nose for rebounds.

9 JUNJUN BONSUBRE – C, 6’4” - Second-year player and member of the Super Six. Big, wide bodied player who needs to work on his post game.

10 OLAIDE ADEOGUN - C, 6’8” The team's biggest and strongest player. Owns a variety of post moves and an accurate medium range jumper. This season won't be a walk in the park for him as teams now have one or two foreigners to throw at him. Has to avoid getting into foul trouble. Coaches need to maximize the potential his size and strength promises.

11 DAN SARA – PG, 5’8” - Worked his way to a roster spot by his performance in the preseason. Known as a shooting guard during his Red Cub days, found his way back to San Beda after serving the National Team and spending time at DLSU as a deep reserve.

12 RICHIE VILLARUZ – SF, 6’0”- Another member of the Super Six. Jumpshooter who can knock down the three; hasn't seen much action in the preseason. Also being groomed as a defensive specialist.

14 DAVID SEMERAD- SF, 6’5” - People still remember his Game 2 performance against the Stags two years ago. Has become bigger but still remains a tough frontline player. Has been working on his medium range jumper in the offseason. Rough play some times gets the opponents' goat or the ref's attention. Has to avoid foul trouble from these.

20 YVAN LUDOVICE – PG, 5’9” - Last player of the Super Six on this team; he was the only player who played the entire 40 minutes during that memorable game. Can drive and stick a long jumper. Another tough guard who is Baser Amer's chief sub at point.

21 VAN ABATAYO – SG, 6’0” - Made the transition from power forward in the Juniors to shooting guard as a Red Lion. Spent a year honing his game in Team B before getting elevated. A slasher who fearlessly attacks the basket and showed early this year an ability to knock down threes, especially from the corners. Surprisingly did not see action in the preseason.

Head Coach: TEODORICO “BOYET” FERNANDEZ
Assistants: Adonis Tierra, Benjie Paras, Ford Arao, JB Sision, Jay Serrano
Consultants: Cholo Martin, Bonnie Carbonnell.
PT/Trainers: Mike Sunga, Leo Dela Cruz

And there you have it. Fifteen men who will don the colors of the Red and the White.

These are the Mighty Red Lions of San Beda College.

And these fifteen men will be going to war.

We are with you all the way.
