Red Cubs Blasted Separate Foes To Maintain Solo Lead

The San Beda Red Cubs are six games away from sweeping the elimination round of the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) junior basketball tournament.

Two recent games brought them there, and they are almost sure of clinching the first of two finals slot.

Last Sept. 9, the Red Cubs came up with a 94-71 smashing of the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, they pulled off a no-bearing, 102-78, blasting of the Emilio Aguinaldo College-ICA Brigadiers.

With the two recent wins, the Red Cubs now hold the solo lead with a 12-0 win-loss record.

San Beda vs JRU

The Red Cubs quickly took charge right in the first period.

Ranbill Tongco played one of his above-par games on Monday, Sept. 9.

Tongco, who averages 14.78 points, led with 18 points and five assists as the Red Cubs went on to post their 11th straight win.

Teammates Adven Diputado and Arvin Tolentino fired 13 points for the Red Cubs, and Norrish Decapia provided 11 for the Mendiola dribblers.

Red Cubs coach JB Sison said everything turned out fine for them right in the first quarter when they took a 29-13 advantage.

Their running game clicked right from the start, with Tongco coming up with eight big points.

“They were getting their shots on the run, and the JRU was kind of slow in that game. And the boys were sharing the ball a lot,” said Sison.

Sison noted that the Red Cubs registered a season-high 25 assists in this game.

When the Light Bombers went to their zone defense in the third period, the Red Cubs turned to Diputado.

Diputado defied the JRU zone with his attacks to the hoops, and produced 11 points as SBC went on to take a commanding 77-48 spread.

San Beda vs EAC-ICA

Four members of the Red Cubs played above their averages this time around on Sept. 14, Saturday.

Tolentino, who is a part of the national 3×3 team, hit a gamehigh 21 points, and he usually norms 14.27 points.

Javee Mocon can do 10.4 points and nine boards per game. He was good for 11 points during the 20 minutes that he was on the floor.

Tongco was at his best again and chipped in 14.

Finally, Niko Abatayo went beyond his norm of 7.13 points by scoring 14 points.

Together, they helped the Red Cubs get off to another great start, and take a 29-15 advantage in the first period.

Making 22 points off their fastbreaks, the Red Cubs maintained a 14-point spread at halftime, 53-39. continue reading here

(side note: The Red Lions also did sweep the elimintation rounds during the 2010-2011 season rewarding them a thrice to beat advantage in the finals against San Sebastian.)
