(1st Update) University of Perpetual Help survived Janine Marciano and San Beda, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 27-25, in the NCAA Season 89 women’s volleyball tournament Monday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Altas improved to 5-2 and joined the Lady Red Spikers in third place but not after they withstood a 33-point outburst by Marciano, whose league-record output was built on 28 attacks and four service aces, one block, ten digs and four receptions..

Despite the win, Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar knows his team still has more to show.

“The players are still trying to figure out each other. I’m still adjusting every position. But we’re happy with the win. We really wanted to end the match in three or four sets.”

San Beda played without its setter Robey Remigio, who was sidelined with a knee injury.

Marciano, who surpassed teammate Ces Molina as the league's best scorer, single-handedly did all the work for San Beda as Molina was only played sparingly due to injury.

Honey Royse Tubino unleashed a career-best 30 points while Shaira Cabriana had 21 points, including the match-clinching drop that completed a Perpetual comeback from a 12-17 deficit in the fourth set.

Reigning MVP Norie Diaz had 15 points, including four aces.

San Beda’s setback left Arellano and College of St. Benilde sharing the top spot with identical 5-1 records.
