Bombers Stun Red Lions
Jose Rizal University relied on its outside shooting to stun defending champion San Beda College, 76-65, and remain in contention for the Final Four Wednesday in the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament.
John Lopez hit 17 points, while Nate Matute had 15, including two triples in the third quarter to help JRU notch its first win over San Beda in two years. The Bombers last beat the Lions, 77-64, in the second round of the 85th season.
JRU, which nailed its fifth win in 14 games, is only half a game behind the fifth-running St. Benilde (5-8) and Lyceum (5-8). Mapua is at solo fourth with a 6-7 slate.
With the Red Lions threatening at 51-54, Matute strung up two treys in the last 24 seconds to hand the Bombers a 60-51 lead at the end of the third.
