Red Lions Too Strong For The Generals

Undefeated Season 86 champs, San Beda College beat Emilio Aguinaldo College as expected, 118-64, to solidify its hold of the second spot in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.

The Red Lions, obviously fighting like a wounded batch owing to the loss they suffered at the hands of San Sebastian at the close of the first round elimination, are probably turning every game in the second round elimination a virtual workout in preparation for their meeting with the Stags.

Yesterday, all Red Lions in coach Frankie Lim’s 12-man rotation scored in a rare show of marksmanship complimented by tenacious defense which broke the backs of the Generals.

“Defensively and offensively, we overpowered them (Generals). They got overwhelmed,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim.

“I got a chance to have everybody play. We had expected to beat EAC, one of the teams that we are supposed to beat,” added Lim.

Garvo Lanete led San Beda with 23 points, Rome de la Rosa added 15, with Mar Villahermosa turning in 13 points and Anjo Caram 11, while the rest among the 12 players used by Lim scored at least two points or more as the Red Lions posted their 10th win in 11 outings.

San Beda also got a fine performance from Jake Pascual who had 10 points aside from 11 rebounds.

The Generals tumbled to their ninth loss in 12 outings, diminishing further what has already been a slim hope for them to make the Final Four.

It was the second time the Red Lions defeated the Generals this season. And in so doing, the Red Lions even stretched their winning margin to 54, erasing the winning margin of 46 they posted when they beat, ironically, the same team, 109-63, during the first round.

Already enjoying an 82-56 lead in the third quarter, the Red Lions even decked the Generals with an unforgiving 36-8 blitz in the fourth to complete the ugly rout.
