After getting back on the winning track the other day, defending champion San Beda hopes to start another run starting with Arellano University Friday in the 87th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Putting aside their stunning 76-65 loss to the Bombers, the Red Lions waylaid the Mapua Cardinals, 76-59, the last time, a victory that is expected to perk them up going to their much-awaited showdown with the league-leading San Sebastian College two weeks from now.

The Stags, toting a 15-0 card, are the first squad to inflict defeat on the Lions.

For now, the Red Lions attention is focused on their game against Chiefs starting at 4 p.m. with a win expected to put pressure on Letran at No. 2 spot.

The Knights are sporting a 12-2 record, thanks to an eight-game winning streak, including an 80-58 win over the slumping Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals last Wednesday, while the Red Lions tote an 11-2 mark.

"We came out flat against JRU and it was one of those days. Good thing we were able to regroup,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim.

Garvo Lanete had 20 points but it was rookie Baser Amer and role players Mar Villahermosa and lanky Michole Sorela who did a fine job against the Cards.

San Beda will play an Arellano team that is still in the race for the No. 4 spot. The Chiefs defeated Lyceum, 89-77, exactly a week ago.
