San Beda Demolishes AU, Shares #2 Spot With Archrival
The heart and experience of a champion once again took over and led the Mendiola quintet to a well-deserved second straight win.
Following their massive rout on the Cardinals last Wednesday, San Beda College quickly followed it up with another 84-60 assault, this time over the struggling Arellano Chiefs in the homestretch of the second round of eliminations of the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association last Friday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Jake Pascual came through with a breakout game of 16 points and ten boards alongside six dish-offs.
San Beda dominated the match as early as the first period when they led the Chiefs by ten after ten minutes of action. Baser Amer and Rome Dela Rosa teamed up with that head start. In the next period, with a balanced scoring attack which was led by Melo Lim and Dave Marcelo, the Red Lions pushed the Chiefs further down the drain. This forced Arellano to stare at a whopping sixteen-point deficit at the intermission.
A revelation for the Chiefs, who dropped their eleventh game against five wins saw the emergence of the future of Arellano. Ralph Salcedo gave Coach Leo Isaac quality minutes when he paced the Legarda quintet with 14 markers, five boards and two assists.
Lanete had the limelight on him in the third canto when he fired away eleven of his sixteen points in that period including two from beyond the arc. The Mendiola five enjoyed their biggest lead of the game at 28, 76-48 when Marcelo opened the final canto with a bucket.
San Beda now shares the second spot with Letran with a a similar 11-2 card while the Chiefs are still lingering at the bottom half of the standings at the 8th spot with a 5-11 slate.
Lanete and Marcelo chipped in 16 and 14 with a combined fourteen boards. Andrian Celada and Donald Gumaru had 12 apiece for the Chiefs who are virtually out of the running for that fourth and final slot in the top four.
