Amer, A New Roar In Town

This is it, one of college basketball’s most feared teams in the new millennium. This is it, the lions have come back to defend its title. This is it, a red cub has fully grown and ready to take the lead to another crown.

A boy from the south of the Philippines rose to becoming one of the upcoming elites of NCAA the oldest collegiate basketball league, which is currently in its 88th season. A former Red Cub and now a Red Lion, he is bred to be hungry for championships, Baser Amer is ready to lead the roar.

Hailing from Davao City, Baser Amer was born on September 29, 1992. How could this 19 year old kid from Mindanao could ever thought that he’d be finding himself playing for an elite team, this kid who got his talents from street pickup games. This may sound like a fairytale story already but there’s more of Amer.

Standing firm, others would think he’s the cocky star blinded by college fame, but he is the opposite, polite with answering questions, a little reserved, he gladly took the chair I offered him and said “Thank You Po” which I found rare or even the first time I heard a college player thanking me for giving him a chair to sit on. When he plays in the hard court he always would offer his hand to pull up opponents on the floor, never trash talks and called for altercations.

Today he’s being eyed to be the next icon of the San Beda Red Lions, he led the juniors division to championships before and now, he looks to doing the same in the big boys division. When asked what he feels about being the next icon of the Red Lions he quickly responded “Nothing changes, what I do is follow what Coach Ronnie Magsanoc says, just play and always be aggressive.”

He idolizes Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics and locally, he likes the style of Jimmy Alapag of the Tropang Texters and Alex Cabagnot of the Petron Boosters.

“Everybody in this league wants to play in the PBA, I’m just happy to be drafted to any team in the future.” – Baser on answering the question what team in the PBA would he like to play.

Baser laughed off when asked if there’s a girl behind his every basket, “I’m single for 4 years already, what I really do is call my parents every night before I go to sleep and ask them to pray for me, that there would be no injuries to all players, to always pray that I’ll have a good game.”

It is rare to see a gentle Lion in the jungle, but San Beda sure has one and this one may be kind hearted but opponents would tell that whenever he shoots the ball, they skip a heartbeat, because they know that there will be no rebound.
