Red Cubs Mangle Helpless Junior Pirates
In what will probably end up as the worst beating ever in the history of NCAA juniors basketball, the San Beda Red Cubs dismembered a severely overmatched Lyceum side, 171-14, at the resumption of the 88th NCAA juniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan today.
It was a case of the Red Cubs reasserting their dominance over the Junior Pirates – only greater this time – as the powerhouse squad had toyed with their hapless counterparts during their two outings last season.
San Beda had previously trashed Lyceum with laughable margins – a 163-28 pounding on July 11 and a 154-35 rout on October 3 last year.
Today’s game was no different, with the Red Cubs of coach Britt Reroma mercilessly mounting a 67-0 onslaught that spanned the first two quarters.
Lyceum’s Aldwin Ligot finally hit a basket midway in the second quarter – the team’s only points in the half – but it was way far from quelling the embarrassment.
At the end the first half, San Beda led by a whopping 90 points, 92-2.
Ligot ended up scoring 12 of Lyceum's 14 points.
San Beda's Ranbill Tongco, meanwhile, outscored the entire Lyceum squad, finishing with 27 points on a perfect 12-of-12 shooting.
The Junior Pirates – only in their second NCAA season since the school joined the league as a guest team last year – failed to notch a single victory in 18 games last season, often losing by huge deficits.
