San Beda Routs U-Mak, Scores Second Victory In Ang Liga
The San Beda Red Booters bannered their 2-0 victory against the University of Makati (U-Mak) Hardy Herons to clinch their second win in the 10th Ang Liga season last July 15 at the San Beda football field.
In the opening bell, the Red Booters kept the match away from the Makati-based footballers as they compelled their evident championship experience over the U-Mak squad.
Sequences of shots were boosted by the pack of hungry Lions, led by Dingdong Fornea and “El Explosivo” Raffy Cabug, to widen their chances of sealing the first goal of the match.
Ali Baldo and Jon Aaron Carlos also tried to instigate a series of attempts, but U-Mak’s priced goalie Felipe Tripolca efficiently guarded the goal, warding off the scoring attempts from the two standouts.
Halfway through the first half, the momentum shifted its side as the Hardy Herons engaged the reigning NCAA kings in a defensive battle before working on key runs in the penalty box.
As the Bedan defenders dramatically speckled to prevent the assault, U-Mak captain Philip Cariño and Jemark Cortes took the driver’s seat and cherry-picked eight scoring attempts to campaign their first half.
Despite the setback given by the young-laden Herons, backup goalkeeper Michael Yuvienco provided a relief to the San Beda bench as he saved the day, leaving U-Mak scoreless all throughout the first period.
Both teams were scoreless as they entered the second half, but it was the Red Booters who wanted it more as the troika of Nhiboy Pedimonte, Ed Walohan and Shaun Soberano increased the chances in taking the first goal.
Despite their remarkable defending in the pitch, the Blue-and-Yellow squad was unfortunate as Cariño accidentally scored an own-goal at the 55th minute to give San Beda a celebrated 1-0 advantage.
With precise in-field communication, Cabug received a wild assist from Pedimonte to pin another goal at the 63rd mark of the football battle.
In spite of the 2-0 insurance, the Mendiola XI continuously stepped on the gas pedal and made various attempts, but they failed to convert due to the poor condition of the playing field approaching the end game.
The proud footballers of the mighty Red School managed to keep the battered U-Mak legion at bay by hanging on their lead until fulltime.
Interim head coach Jeffrey “Pong” Liman expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance and the outcome of the game.
“Overall, I’m not satisfied. It’s a win, but we need to look at our performance. We made some various attempts to score, but we can’t execute a good finish. We must improve on that matter,” Liman said.
