San Beda Five Defuse Heavy Bombers
San Beda demolished Jose Rizal University for the second time this season, 67-45, to stay atop the standings in NCAA Season 88 action Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.
The Red Lions bucked a hot start by the Heavy Bombers, who came out to an 8-0 lead, to push their league-leading win-loss record to 11-2. JRU fell back into a tie with Perpetual Help at third and fourth places with identical 8-5 slates.
A 14-4 run late in the third period gave the Red Lions a double-digit, 51-37, to end the third quarter.
Behind the efforts of Ola Adeogun, Art Dela Cruz, and Jake Pascual, the Red Lions cruised to a lead of as high as 26 points, 64-38 in the final period.
“The boys really exerted efforts especially in the second half,” said San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc, who gave credit to the Heavy Bombers for a strong start.
“They surprised us a with good game plan, buti na lang naka-turn around ang mga boys. They gave us different looks sa halfcourt sets.”
JRU main man Nate Matute was again held to a miserable game, finishing with just one point. Another top Heavy Bombers scorer, Alex Almario went scoreless.
Interestingly, the Heavy Bombers won the rebounding department, 40-35. But they committed 26 costly turnovers against San Beda’s 14, spelling doom for JRU.
Pascual finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists and four steals to lead San Beda.
