SBC-A Juniors And Midgets Continues To Roar In WNCAA
Centro Escolar University, Emilio Aguinaldo College and Rizal Technological University nailed berths to the next round in the senior division of the 43rd WNCAA tournament over the weekend (Sept. 1 and 2).
CEU blasted University of Asia and the Pacific, 25-18, 25-14, 25-23, at the St. Scholastica’s gym in Manila on Sunday, Sept. 2, to sweep Senior A and nail the No. 1 semifinal slot which carries a twice-to-beat edge. St. Scholastica’s College will try to grab the other Final Four seat against La Consolacion College Manila next weekend. Miriam College paces Senior B at 3-0 and must beat EAC in its next assignment to seal the top slot.
In senior basketball played at the RTU gym in Mandaluyong also on Sunday, defending champion CEU, EAC and RTU are assured of seats in the eight-team quarterfinals. Under league rules, the top 3 teams will advance to the quarterfinals while the fourth and fifth-ranked squads of both Senior A and B groups clash clash for the two remaining slots. The same format applies to the junior division.
RTU downed UA&P, 71-34, for a 3-0 card, the same record of CEU and EAC. Still in contention are St. Scholastica, a 44-41 winner over La Consolacion; Philippine Women’s University, which stopped San Beda College Alabang, 73-47; and Miriam which routed Assumption College, 45-27, in the tournament being supported by Goody, Mikasa, Molten, MJC Photography, network partner AKTV and radio partner Monster Radio RX 93.1.
Meanwhile, host De La Salle Zobel remained unscathed in both midget and junior divisions of basketball and volleyball.
DLSZ won over San Beda, 51-35, on Saturday, Sept. 1, to pace Junior B at 4-0. Angelicum College posted a 48-28 win over St. Paul College Pasig while Chiang Kai Shek College thumped PWU, 62-28, to stay in second place at 3-1. Assumption bested La Salle College Antipolo, 55-47, to join idle Miriam on top of Junior A at 3-0.
In junior volleyball, St. Scholastica conquered Angelicum, 25-15, 25-23, 25-23, and San Beda dominated Poveda, 25-10, 25-17, 25-14, to lead Junior A at 3-0. Carrying the same slate in Junior B is DLSZ, a 25-4, 25-18, 25-5 winner over PWU.
San Beda likewise paces the midget level at 4-0 following a 25-21, 26-24 decision over Poveda, which fell to 2-1. DLSZ occupies solo second at 2-0.
