Defense was the key as the San Beda College Red Lions blasted the College of Saint Benilde Blazers, 74-56, for their ninth win in 11 games of the 88th season of the NCAA Season 88, Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

“The boys were very aggressive and hard working. I didn’t worry earlier,” said SBC mentor Ronnie Magsanoc. “The players gave their best performance and they were never rattled.”

In the first quarter, baskets by Jake Pascual, Anjo Caram, and JP Mendoza broke a 7-all deadlock, as the reigning back-to-back defending champs found their groove

A 15-6 run capped the remainder of the first half, as the Red Lions surged ahead to a 44-22 advantage with 53 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Although CSB narrowed the gap to 43-53 after a 5-0 swing courtesy of Rhoel Maconocido in the middle of third quarter, San Beda countered with a 9-3 blast to counter the Blazers comeback.

It was cruise control for the Red Lions, as they established a 70-51 lead late in the fourth quarter.

Anjo Caram and team captain Jake Pascual tallied 13 points apiece for the Red Lions. Center Ola Adeogun fouled out with 2:22 remaining, but not before he tallied 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Art Dela Cruz added 10 markers, while Baser Amer dished out 11 dimes.

No player from CSB logged more than nine points, as point guard Luis Sinco led his side in scoring.

It was the fourth straight loss for CSB, which tumbled to 3-8, just a win above the cellar-dwelling Lyceum Pirates.

The Red Lions out-rebounded the Blazers 50-35 including five second chance possessions down the stretch to keep CSB at bay.
